"Friendly" fire. It's a little pet peeve of mine. Do any of you use house rules for accidentally hitting a different target whenever missing the indended target with ranged atacks? I've always thought that it would make mixed melee/ranged combat more interesting if "friendly" fire were used. Besides, it seems that the PC's would get helped more often than hurt by the rule. The monsters and NPC's have many more opportunities to use ranged attacks and therefore, many more opportunities to hit their own troops.

I use the standard -4 to hit when firing into melee, and if it misses the target, but is good enough to hit the person closest to them, it hits them instead.

I use that standard rule as well, to great effect. Nothing adds to the tactical decision-making of the players like the chance that one of them will plug another in the back of the head. Provides some interesting in-party role playing opportunities.

You can also try the natural 1 means a critical hit on an ally engaged in melee combat. Considerably more dangerous, but also makes the PCs like carefully about the tactical situation, rather than just lobbing arrows in there.
