| Callista09-03-06, 01:20 PM | The wish is being granted by a friendly wizard, so no twisting (too badly). What the PC said: "I want the ability and resources to save a party member, the next time one of them is in danger of death." So... what can the spell do with that? I'm stumped, and I don't want to just give the guy a potion of healing... |
| Archmage Atrus09-03-06, 01:22 PM | Give them the spell like ability to cast heal, once (ever.) Not exactly game altering. Edit: Or if you want to make it a little more powerful, give them the ability to cast heal once, and then the next time a party member is near death (below, say, 10% of his hit points,) have a time stopish effect on the player, that ends the moment they walk up to the near death PC and cast heal. (If they choose to do something else in this time, they waste the opportunity and the time stop ends.) (Note I said time stopish because I'm well aware you can't cast heal on other party members while in a time stop.) |
| Always-Late09-03-06, 01:42 PM | Three scrolls of appear; one is a 20th level Sanctuary, one is a Teleport (or Plane Shift, Astral Plane only), and one is a Heal. Only the PC can cast it (regardless of class or race, he never fails,) but he can do it as an immediate action. He can only cast it on one of his party members, but not himself. "Use them wisely." |
| Guy Humual09-03-06, 01:47 PM | It's an altruistic wish, so even if the wish wasn't being granted by someone friendly to the PCs, I'd give the PC something good. I seem to remember that you're using 1st edition there Callista so I'm not exactly sure what you can give them in the way of magic items, but some kind of staff or wand of healing would be nice. |
| TheyCallMeTomu09-03-06, 01:50 PM | Fortunate Fate spell. It's from the SpC: It's a 7th level cleric spell, so it's about in lines with Wishes power; it'd have the special ability that it can be used as an immediate action, rather than being cast specifically on a party member. |
| Yaeri09-03-06, 02:08 PM | I would let the wish create either a one-time-usable spell like ability, or a small item such as a ring. The purpose of either would remain as vague as being able to help a friend in deadly danger once. And when the moment comes that the character uses the ability/item, I would decide there on the spot what helpful effect it would have. (within the limits of what an 8th or 9th level spell can do) |
| Vexsom09-03-06, 02:27 PM | A slightly humorous alternative would be to have the wizard materalize a small slip of paper that looks like a letter of credit but says 'rain check'. A magical item called 'Rain Check of Charity', a one time use item which, depending on the circumstances of it's use it can: heal, remove poison, remove disease, restore lost or negative levels, or teleport (safe distance). |
| Milandros09-03-06, 02:54 PM | I'd suggest go with something simple. Since a wish can raise the dead without penalty, let him have Heal, useable once as an immediate action, can even be cast in that instant between the fatal blow landing and the soul leaving the body - but not on himself, of course. After one round the sould will have left the body, so it's too late. It was a non-selfish wish, and something like this is in no way game-breaking. It's a nice one-off get out of jail free card that will be remembered and really appreciated when it's used. |

(within the limits of what an 8th or 9th level spell can do) I think this is a better idea than a 'heal' spell. It is more in keeping with the wording of your wish. They can just invoke the power when it is required as a free action. For example, one of the players falls down a cliff - the wish might cast a featherfall spell, create a net or a giant baloon to land on. A character is just about to be blasted to death by a fire dragons breath - wish will cause protextion from fire on the person, or a wall of ice appears etc... The affect does not have to be particulalry powerful but it would be immensly versitile. Great use of wish dude! |
| JamesDruidDM09-03-06, 03:52 PM | well if you gonna make it so the Pc can save one other PC once, why not a one time teleport other or teleport mass (or party only) to a safe area. since its a selfless wish, wanting to save another, I would make it fairly worth it. or perhaps a Contingency + party teleport to a safe spot? that way he doesnt even know it, but has the ability and resources to save not only one person but the entire party from one illfated event |
| Milandros09-03-06, 05:00 PM | Alternatively, and I thik I like this one best, he gets a limited wish useable at will - possibly as an immediate action. |
