I'm considering allowing combattants to deliberately "leave an opening" as a free action, thus provoking an AoO. This may seem stupid, it has a use. For example, a high AC character deliberately soaking up an AoO from a monster, so that the wizard can cast a spell without provoking an AoO. In my game, the monk regularly does this already, by moving through threatened areas.

It seems to me that it should be possible to provoke an AoO, just by deliberately opening your defenses. I figure this is best simulated with a free action.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, criticisms, comments.

Provoke, yes.

But just because you provoke an AoO doesn't mean the monster has to take it. If an intelligent critter sees an opening in the fighter's defense at the same time he sees the mage start waving his hands and chanting...who do you think he' s going to attack ;)

Yup. I'm aware of that. I make that determination based on how savvy the monster is. Zombies are easy to trick. Seasoned veterans are not so easily taken in. :D

Indeed. You might as well just run around his threatened area and hope he doesn't have combat reflexes :)

Without even house ruling it I'm sure you could make this a valid use of the bluff skill.

Also.. once the wiz has enough ranks in concentration, he wont need to worry

There's already a rule regarding this. You can use the bluff skill for a feignt and either take advantage of the monster or whatever it is you want. It let's the monster make an opposed sense motive check, factoring in veterens vs. zombies.

Malcolm: I crack a sunrod and run out of the wagon screaming at the dragon waving my arms back and forth, trying to get him to leave the halflings in the other cart alone

DM: the dragon uses his precious attack of oppurtunity on you

Malcolm: crap! I forgot I'm still low on HP

DM: *roll* it appears the dragon has knocked you to the ground with -1 hit points

(this is precisely what I thought about when reading this thread ):D
