An interesting, albeit disgusting idea I had today. If a character fails a Will Save (horribly) vs. a fear effect of some kind, like a spell or a monster's Frightful Presence, would it be a good idea (in a less serious campaign) to make them a roll a Fort save and if they fail, they soil themselves? How would enemies behave that had a fairly acute sense of smell?

Just a weird thought I had.

Sure. Heck I'd do it in a more serious campaign as well just to illustrate the severity of the situation.

As for the enemies, well if they are the ones with the frightfull presence I'm sure they're probably use to that reaction by now and would be pleased that their tactics are working.

Either that or die from laughing at some loser that can't hold their bowels inplace. :D

Depends on the campaign I guess. :)

I'd be wary about this, and discuss it with the players before you implement such a rule. Remember, they might not like having their heroic characters soil themselves. I had a similar experience, when a PC got into a 'hold your liqour' drinking contest at a bar. He failed to make the fortitude goal I set (and by a fair amount), so I ruled he threw up on the floor. His next line? (this was an online game)

I am reminded of Sir Robin who had personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon Hill.

Yeah, as long as you only do the soiling thing once in a while, it's a good idea. If the character doesn't clean or change his/her pants after the encounter, make sure to have every NPC they meet sniff the air and ask "What is that smell?"

I would simplify things and make it just a natural 1 on a will save causes the soiling. A fort save would only make sense if the person is actively clenching.

The only gameplay affect I can think of would be some sort of enhancement for creatures with Scent. For instance, they can pinpoint the target within 10 or 15 feet, instead of 5 feet.

Definitely want to discuss it with your players first, as Erendor stated. No need to cause friction with your players over something that, while possibly in the interest of "realism," is most likely to be considered just plain juvenile.

However, if you're really interested in having a PC soil himself, may I suggest a gnome prankmeister (aka rogue and/or sorcerer possibly with arcane trickster at higher levels) utilizing the Really Limited Wish spell (aka Prestidigitation).
