hrm...there's some sites with a 'test' of sorts to figure out your ability scores,

but the ones i seen tend to generally be really low scores unless you lie outragously on them.

It has been suggested that I.Q. divided by ten is approximately intelligence.

sarella do you happen to remeber these sites or could i google this they seem interesting

Edit: Nevermid i just googled it heres the web adress if your interested anyone http://www.co.jyu.fi/~np/rpg/abilities.html

and here is what i got

Age: 14 years
Ability Score
Strength 12
Dexterity 13
Constitution 12
Intelligence 14
Wisdom 14
Charisma 15

I took the tests. They are pretty good. The Charisma part of the test doesn't make sense to me, but the rest is very good in my opinion. I would probably make sure the players don't get any outside help for the Intelligence portion of the test.

I agree on the Charisma thing, retarded. My intelligence got nerfed. My dex got a boost. A really big boost.

Dex- 16 :D
Con- 12
Int- 14
Wis- 10
Cha- 12

Yeah, this test is bad. I have bad Dexterity in real life (sure, I seem to be good at escaping holds but I have butter fingers and average reflexes) and I think my Wisdom should be a bit higher (philosophy and religion are very interesting topics on which I have varying opinions and theories).

And I should have a Charisma less than 10, really.

(philosophy and religion are very interesting topics on which I have varying opinions and theories).

Maybe it's just saying your theories aren't very good...

Seriously, these test are currently a little weak, and there was a thread that gave a long description as to how to get your INT score from your IQ (and it wasn't /10). The Charisma portions tend to over-emphasize interest in people rather then interaction, and a few other issues I've noted.

You'd be better off realistically measuring the physical stats. See how long you can hold your breath, how much can you carry easily, and how many knives can you throw at your friend before you hit him...

oh wait... nix that one. :)

haha me and my friend tried the knife idea i hit him the second time i think i must of scored a x2 critical because he didnt get back up..... :weep:

Better than a lot of my characters apparently, and my con score should be lower, it just doesn't account for the alcohol tolerance of the average British student.

Hmm I appear to be:

Age 25
Gender: Male

Str 9
Dex 10
Con 9
Int 15
Wis 10
Cha 9

Hmmm . . . but it really does not take into account some aspects of my life, such as the fact I studied philosphy and religion, which I think I should raise my wisdom a bit, and that I've even had one professor who commented on my "vast array of knowledge" (though I have a very low opinion of myself).

there was a thread that gave a long description as to how to get your INT score from your IQ (and it wasn't /10).Here you go.

That would be a misinterpretation. 10.5 has always been the average normal human ability.

If you want to assume that real-life IQ and D&D Intelligence are the same thing, then converting them is simple. Intelligence in the general human population has (approximately, by way of 3d6) a normal distribution with mean 10.5 and standard deviation sqrt(8.75), and the most common IQ scale has a normal distribution with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. Since a given Intelligence score is therefore (Intelligence - 10.5) / sqrt(8.75) standard deviations from the mean Intelligence, and since the corresponding IQ score must be the same number of standard deviations from the mean IQ, we have IQ = 100 + 15 (Intelligence - 10.5) / sqrt(8.75).

This is the correct way to convert between the two, because it preserves the statistical properties of the distributions. If a person with a given IQ is in the top n percent of IQ scores, then obviously his corresponding D&D intelligence should be in the top n percent of Intelligence scores; multiplying Intelligence by 10, for example, does not meet this requirement (in fact, it converts to a distribution with mean 105 and standard deviation sqrt(875) and that differs from the usual IQ distribution considerably).

Note that the 4d6 method of character generation is simply a way to select above-average individuals from a general population which is still assumed to be distributed as 3d6.

Converting in this way puts 18 Intelligence at about 140 IQ, and 140 is considered "genius" in the IQ scale I used. If you think the result is bogus because you scored a 160 on an IQ test, then it was probably either a test with a different standard deviation (I used the Weschler scale, and your test might have used Cattell), or a bogus test (most are), or you really are smarter than 99.996% of the population. If it was the former, and you know the standard deviation of your IQ scale, then you can substitute it for 15 in the calculation above and get a decent result. If it was the latter, then your Int is 22.My favorite part is the "then it was probably either a test with a different standard deviation (I used the Weschler scale, and your test might have used Cattell), or a bogus test (most are), or you really are smarter than 99.996% of the population." You don't have an 18 Int, no matter how much early morning math you took in 6th grade. :D

As for studying things like philosophy/theology, that would have nothing to do with your base ability score (assuming that a person's faculties can be accurately broken down into the six D&D abilities, which is a crap assumption). When you study something, making it an area of expertise, you're talking about skill ranks, the skill focus feat, and the various +2/+2 skill feats. Wis is just natural talent, and heavily applied study in a skill can eclipse the natural talent of characters with even an 18 in the relevant stat at even first level.

And you're first level, too. And you don't have an 18. So the eclipsing is fine. :D

The strength thing based off your bench press is pretty innaccurate also. If someone can bench 300 lbs thats impressive.. unless he weighs 400. Then it means jack-squat.

Where a person who can bench 250ish but weighs 140 lbs should be considered very strong.

I'd like to point out that studying philosophy and religion does not make one "wise".

Also, D&D stats are not relative. So benching 300 is benching 300, what your weigt is doesn't matter. Otherwise the average Halfling and the average Ancient Red Dragon should ahve the same strength score.

How do you measure that "in real life"? I can accept that my stats are not very good as far as what we're used to seeing in PCs but I refuse to believe I'm a level 1 Commoner. I'm too old to be level one. I've replaced just about every part on my '65 VW by myself, motor, front end, brakes. How many points in Craft is that? 3 or 4? I grew up with a house full of critters (and not just dogs and cats). How many points in Handle Animal is that? 2 maybe? I've done most of the minor plumbing repairs at home. That should a point there, right? I have basic knowledge of power tools and woodworking. Another point. That's more points than a level one Commoner. When I worked armed security I shot 596 out of 600 with the .357. I only needed 480 to qualify. Does that count as Weapon Focus? I don't have Ride but I used to drive stake beds and bobtails for a living. I think that's more than one rank in Drive. A point in Computers, most of you would probably have at least two or three, while our Grandparents would have no ranks. I can even accept I'm a Commoner seeing as most of my skills are blue collar skills but I'm not level 1 ;)

Man, that test sucks ass. Question on dexterity is not how nimble you are, but what level of competition you've been to??? Bench press goes from "under 100" to "150 or more"??? What about 100-150?

If you want to get your D&D STR score bring your PHB to the weight room at your local YMCA, flip to the page on carrying capacity (162), and see what you can overhead press (shoulder press, military press, whatever-you-want-to-call-it press), and then look yourself up on the chart. If "lift over head" means something different in your view (gitting it over your head but not up high enough to lock out your arms for 2 seconds ((I think that's the powerlifting rules?)) ) then look it up based on that.
Warforged_Monk_of_Doomz

05-09-05, 06:47 PM
i think the way it does STR it total BS and that it should account for full body STR, because if you look on ANY character sheet the amount you can carry on your back is directly related to STR and i know people who can bench like 200lbs. but my legs are equal to if not stronger than theirs so i think it should find another way of doing it that actually makes sense but yet some of the other stuff like INT and CHA i thaught was pretty accurate.

Socrates and I disagree. :P

Me too. It may not determine all of your Wisdom score, but it'll have a fair bit to do with it.

I don't know what your'e plans are with this, but I once knew I guy who played in a game back in the 80s where the players were themselves in Detroit when a bunch of monsters came out of the Detroit River. not too hard to imagine really. I don't know anything else about it though, I haven't talked to that dude in at least eight years.

Personally, I've often considered picking a group of my buddies and stating them out and running them through some All Flesh Must Be Eaten or something along those lines. As the GM, I of course would be the crazy necromantic zombie master who could forsee their every move. I would stat up a bunch of extras to kill off too.

Is that weird?

By that method, I got a strength score of 9.

Ok, so what does this hafto do with wisdom? The D&D definition of Wisdom, as quoted from the 3.5 PHB, is "Being in tune with and aware of one's surroundings"; which is why listen and spot at Wisdom based.

You, my friend, simply have either a high INT, or ranks in knowledge skills (the latter being more likely). In D&D, Wisdom has NOTHING to do with philosophy or religion (unless you're talking about a cleric's ability to cast spells).

Nononono, thats not good at all!

How much you can lift is only one small part of the strength stat.

It also effects:

Your melee attacks (how well you can hit things)
Your melee damage (how hard you can hit things)
How high you can jump
How well you can swim
How well you can climb
How well you can grapple
How much you can carry without being slowed down

Basing your strength score on your lifting ability might give a indicator, but certainly isn't the whole story.

According to that method, I have a strength 10/11, but I am definately below average strength. I can't throw a decent punch, can't jump, can't grapple and can't climb. The fact I have strong enough legs to lift a sort of heavy object and carry stuff kind of far shouldn't completely override the fact that I am otherwise weak.

Carn: I always figured that the reason a cleric uses Wisdom to cast spells is because it represents how in tune he is with the world around him, not just as far as paying attention, but also spiritual attunement.
