I recently had an idea to run a campaign using ourselves as characters. We play with the same relationship we have in real life (friends), except of course for the fact that we have character class training.

Everybody plays themselves with their stats, race, class, and alignment given to them by a test (if they really disagree with it, they can change something). Does anyone have suggestions for a good character test? The one I'm thinking about using is http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/terragf/.

I think this will be a very interesting from a role-playing perspective. It will be difficult to imagine myself in the positions of my character, and to talk to my friends about how to best explore a dungeon, etc. This also proves, once and for all, that people of conflicting alignments can work together. I'm lawful good, and one of my good friends who I game with is chaotic evil. We get along just fine. (Of course, this could change when we both have enough power to annihilate a city.:P)

Lastly, does anyone have other suggestions about running this? Playing this? Any advice would be welcome.

You could use that test, yes, or you could go with a different system to determine ability scores (like, say, have the other players 'rate' you in all term, trying to be as honest as possible, and then take the average score +1 or something).

I have to say that I thought of doing this myself, but I dismissed it in favor of the good ol' ways of character creation with all the imagination and creativity one can muster.

My question about this is: are you going to be playing the characters exactly as you act in daily life? Because if so, you're going to get some trouble distinguishing IC from OOC stuff.

Be sure to videotape the guy who finds out the average rating his friends gave his int score was 10.

my way to determine ability scores would be...

str - take the amount you can bench press and divide it by 10.5
int - take an iq test and divide the result by 10, so an iq of 130 = 13 int
dex -
con - have a breath holding contest or punch each other until you pass out you’ll need to figure out your str scores first so you can add the correct damage...
wis - this your friends could determine
cha - ask your friends or run for president...you decide
