And to hell my game goes... [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, not quite, but I wanted a dramatic title to get everyone's attention.

My game started with about six people. I met this new guy who wanted to try out it, so I invited him and it was up to seven. Then my friend Josh wanted to play, but I didn't want that big of a group. So I basically had him become my mini-DM, helping me with encounters and run things in the group and all that.

This didn't get very far. Before I knew it I had a drumline competition every weekend (not enough time to prepare or was busy on weekened, had to cancel). Then I have two AP tests a week apart (need to study so I can get into college, had to cancel). Then there is a ren faire, and everyone wants to go to that instead of gaming that week. That's fine by me, I wanted to go myself.

Well, this is where it gets interesting. I had a temp of 100+ on Friday and Saturday (much higher than my normal 97), and on Sunday (day of ren faire and normal game sessions) I still have a temp of 99. So my mom says I can't go.

Fair enough, I still don't feel good anyway and I spent the time practicing (3+ hours of drum practice, yes, I am that dedicated). By the time 4 (when everyone was planning on returning to my house to pick up their stuff) came around my girlfriend, Amanda, had gotten ****** off at her parents and was over at my house. I'm upstairs getting some water, and when I walk back down a few of my game group and some of their friends have arrived to pick up their stuff. Well, one girl in the group, Kay, tells me some crap, then says "**** off" and leaves.

Well, this pisses me off pretty well considering I still feel like crap, and Amanda was already in a bad mood so it makes her day too. Apparently Kay and another of my players, Bobby, were complete ***es to Amanda.

I know Bobby well enough that he thinks I blew them off to hang out with Amanda (though I really hope that by now he would know I'm not an idiot like that), and I think the same of Kay. Well I have a talk with Kay, and she tells me some crap like "I'm not mad at you for hanging out with Amanda, I'm mad at you for going back out with a bad girlfriend." Basically what she said was "No Dan, I don't know why you're ****** at me but I'm being a ***** to you because you went back into a "bad" relationship. Look at the mess Amanda left you last time, despite the fact that you are bipolar and prone to depression and were depressed before Amanda broke up with you."

Well, I get ****** and kick Kay out of the group. Then Bobby and two other people quit.

Well, now I'm bringing Josh into my group, so it's down to four. I really don't mind everyone quiting, I think four will be easier to manage and better for the players.

Now here is my concern; I'm wondering what I should do with the players? I'm thinking of giving them the choice to make a new character (I'll give them a couple of levels to make it more attractive, note this is everyone's first game, so new characters will likely be much better made) or continueing the campaign as is.

Sorry for the misspellings, I need to take my sister to get her car.

Wow. Don't you hate it when high-school politics gets in the way of a good time? I feel for you, man...

I personally would recommend polling your remaining players -- ask them if they want to keep going with the same chars, or make new ones.

Sorry for the misspellings, I need to take my sister to get her car.I only saw one...you seem awfully apt with the written word for a high school student. (Taking AP English? :P)

I can't believe I am even replying to this, but...

First off, your friends are just trying to watch out for you and you dumped on them. Obviously they feel a little jealous (especially this Kay chick, must be underlying feelings there) about Amanda, or they just plan don't like her and think you could do better.

Second off, you dumped on your friends, which is not cool in my book, but is your choice. Just realize that it isn't that easy to find friends that actually care about how others treat you.

Third off, If you have more current players than new players you should let the new players make characters of an appropriate level (I go with group average) and then work in the others leaving the party or kill them in some dramatic, but cool, fashion. If you have more new players than current players (so they aren't that into the story) I would start everyone over at 1st.

Good Luck with your game.

jnrhayz - Wow, it's amazing how well you understand the situation from one single post that's barely two paragraphs long. Sorry to sound particularly irritiable but replying to a post of this nature with some comment that tries to have some insight is slighty off. The OP wasn't asking whether or not you thought he was "dumping" on his friends. Just saying.

In future, if you can't believe you're replying to a post.........then don't.

Nephite - Too much social stuff man. Gaming is about that, Gaming. It sounds as though you and your friends have some issues to deal with that don't even pertain to gaming. Before you start wondering what you should be doing with the "player characters" maybe you should start figuring out what to do with the "players".

It sounds like the situation is a stressful one but I'm not there and I don't have all the perspectives/information. The best advice I can give you is to put the campaign on hiatus while you figure out what to do with you friends. That is, of course, assuming that you still want to be friends with them.

Momentarilly, I have. The three players that are left have always gotten along quite well (two of them have know each other since before grade school, and the other seems to get along well with everyone else), and I see no problems intigrating my mini-DM as a player character.

I know what you mean about the social stuff, but I figured it could give a better understanding of the group and the underlying issues.

As for my friendships, I more or less know what I am going to do. I have no real desire to get those four back into my D&D group, besides even if I did it would just renew the tensions.
