| constanzza12-05-06, 08:03 AM | maybe this is a wrong place to ask this question, but ... i was dming to some guys, when a ranger reached 4th lvl, where he gets animal companion. i red the info from PHB about this special ability, but got nothing. i need to know does this animal companion behaves like a "pet" in wow, or does it affects the ranger. for example if the a.c. is killed, does something happens to ranger, like does he looses hp, or if he gots any penalty for that. if the a.c. , or does it at all, advances in lvl , how goes this lvl progression. thx alot, concho |

They adavance as per the Druids Animal Companions, but a Rangers Companion is always four levels below a Druids (unless they take a feat). The animal gets a certain number of tricks which it has been taught to do, things such as attack and down - it does these on command from the Ranger. To do anything else a handle animal check is required. See the handle animal skill to see the kinds of tricks that can be taught. Now if the Ranger has time and a decent handle animal they can teach their Companion extra tricks to make it more versitile, but this takes weeks - again see the handle animal skill. Personally I let the player control the animal companion, but remain aware of the restrictions upon what it can do. I always suppose that it is friendly and protective of the player, but it won't do things that require a trick to do normally. So I won't allow an animal companion to run past another opponent to attack a Wizard, unless the PC points at the Wizard and uses the attack command - a free action. Can someone confirm this, I haven't got my books and am a little hazy. |

He can push it (per Animal Handling) as a move action. The difference here is that a non-companion trained animal requires a move action to command to do a trick and a standard action to push. I let the player control it. Its one more thing I don't have to worry about. I do butt in if the player takes actions that the animal is not really smart enough or trained enough to do. So pretty much the same as Rellen. |
