Well it depends.

First of all, getting knocked out or dying are two very different situations. One implies you are still alive (Knocked-Out), the other implies you're...well...not (Dead).

Second of all we'd have to know the relationship between you and the non-flying creature. Is it an animal companion/special mount/familiar/some other class ability that allows you to retain an animal in any form or shape.
If it is, then its actions depend, amongst others, on the tricks it was taught. Had you taught it to fetch help when you were unconcious, then that would be its most likely action, had you taught it to get to you, whether alive or dead, then it would probably seek ways to do that. Had you taught it to run away in the face of dangers that could cost you your life, it would probably do that.

Finally in the event of your demise, the creature would simply pack its bags and leave if nothing was keeping it there (unless you taught it to) and would return to a life it knew before it joined you.

In general, if you die or otherwise get taken out...you'd lose your ainmal. Unless you had taught it what to do/where to go or someonne else when over and took care of it for you.

In general, an animal will just wander away if not given any other orders. If you leave your trusty dog at the city gate, it may wait a couple days..then it will move along with it's life.

Many players somehow get the idea that thier animal somehow magical stays with them, always. So no matter what happens, they just have to call and the animal runs over.

This is one of the big draw backs of an animal, to off set what it brings. You have to care for it and watch out for it. If you don't you will lose it. Most people have pets, so use that for an example of 'what' would happen.

An animal companion, even a druids companion, will not act unless directed (Handled) by the druid. Please see "Animal Handling" for more details.

A druid or ranger can handle thier companion animal as a free action so as long as the druid is conscious and has a line of communication to the animal, you are set.

IF the druid is not able to communicate with the animal, I would say it is up to the DM to decide its actions... normally this would include sitting by the druid's side, or if it couldn't get there, it might just howl in the general direction of the druid.

If the animal was attacked, it would probably flee, (as any other animal would).

What? He goes and gets help, you losers. Haven't you ever seen Lassie?

"What's that boy? Timmy's in the well? Guys, I think Lassie is trying to tell us something!"

But, really, I thought this thread was about D&D Monster Animal Crackers. Coolness. Little cookie Beholders, dragons, orcs, and illithids.
