My group has gotten really into animated shields. The Paladin and the Cleric took the Divine Shield feats and got there AC through the roof. I was thinking about disarming the shields, but I don't want to try without knowing how it would work. Just like a normal disarm? Do they get their STR? Please help.

Indeed, disarming a shield is just like disarming a weapon: opposed attack roll. Note that the opposed attack roll doesn't have to be made with the shield, any attack the defender has will do. Futhermore, if the disarm fails the defender is not entitled to an attack of oppurtunity. You indeed would add your strength so long as you were using your strength for the attack roll (as in, not using weapon finesse or some such).

Now, my group came to the unanimous decision (5-0) that the "animated" shield property was lame and threw it out. Then again my group did the same thing with the "cleric" core class, so perhaps we are just eccentric.

Either way, disarm will do the job just fine.

Animated shields are a popularly banned magical item.

Like I said, by unanimous decision, my group decided to throw out clerics for the same reason we threw out druids. We felt they were lame.

I could go on about the jokes being thrown around about "ECL" (effective cleric level), the noncore base classes that fill the role better or whatever, but in the end those things could be debated. Lameness cannot.

Lame is a subjective thing. If not having clerics, metamagic rods, animated shields, Full caster progression PrCs or whatever else in our game makes it less lame, thats a good thing and kudos to us for taking the initiative and tossing it.

Druidical lamenity I viddy well, and I agree that Favoured Souls are cooler than Clerics... but I don't see the lameness in Clerics.

For simplicity's sake, I'd just rule it the same way as a regular disarm.

Personally I'd just toss a dispell magic onto it, it would loose it's magical effects for a few rounds.
It falls to the ground, and then might have to be picked up before it would resume protecting the user.

As far as disarm goes, you can rule-0 that the defender has a penalty to the opposed check as they are not actually holding the shield in any way whatsoever.
