Just wanted to share a rather interesting incident that happened in the game I was DMing for today.

Mostly because I thought it would be funny (it was), I included an Animated Spoon as one of the things that attacked my players when they entered the house of a wizard. Basically, the joke is that spoons are sharper than the knives in our college cafeteria... my friends often playfully threaten each other with them, and it's not uncommon for someone to be seen cutting their meat with a cafeteria spoon.

For my animated spoon, I used the Animated Object stats and extrapoated downwards to get a Diminutive Animated Object with 1 hit point, a Hardness of 10 (metal), and a Grapple modifier of -15.

Basically, because of the high hardness and small size, only the group's fighter, and only on a high damage roll, could damage the spoon. Not that it was much of a threat; after all, it could only do 1 damage on a hit.

So after a while, they gave up on destroying it; and the party's bard decided to grab the spoon. She rolled a "1" on the opposed grapple check twice before she succeeded. Hilarity ensued! Imagine a halfling bard attempting to grab a jumping, bouncing animated spoon, and failing miserably several times before she succeeds.

She then stuffed the spoon into her backpack.

When the same backpack is opened in order to retrieve healing potions, the spoon, of course, jumps right back out. This time it only took the bard one try before she got the spoon and put it, more intelligently, into a side pocket of the backpack.

At this point, I had nearly sprayed Diet Mountain Dew out of my nose several times... you really had to have been there to get the full effect.

Oh, yeah, and the bard wants to research a spell to let her take control of the animated spoon.

With the famed ingenuity of players, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up using the spoon to kill one of my BBEGs, or something!

In the words of one of the greatest superheroes ever, I shall shout the mighty battlecry of justice the TICK would use....

SPOON! :D

As a side note, never fear what the animated spoon will do to your BBEG. Do however fear if the PC's acquire the mighty artifact, the animated SPORK!

Spoons and other such object seem to ammuse everyone (including me) wherever I go. Sporks too....

Don't forget the mighty spatula!

Very ammusing...

I don't believe the spork actually existed in the time period of DnD...but, I'll let that slide on sheer hilarity...

But, due to the fact, plastics weren't invented until this century...I certainly know the spatula wouldn't fit into that timeline. (Barring the whole, wizard travels foward in time and brought it back...but in that case, why not bring back a bomb or land-mine or gun...) :smirk:
I'm just being rude now...sorry.

That is definately funny. I'm the president of the United States, and I approve this spoon story.

You could make it a powerful intelligent item whose primary goal is to subjugate all animated knives...

But QUAKE the presence of the GREAT SPORKNIFE!
:headexplo :OMG! (Great idea for a Soulknife using a giant Sporknife, or a Sporknife Master, or a Sporknife Kensai)

Fleeing a five-headed cryohydra that they couldn't hope to defeat, three adventurers burst into a room. The first one in was the level 3 rogue, followed by the level 3 cleric, who was the party's main combatant, and following him, the rather amusingly played 3rd level barbarian.

They were headed across the next chamber when the carpet rose up and grappled the cleric. For many rounds, the cleric was stuck inside of a rolled up carpet that was banging itself on the ground. After miserably failing numerous grapple checks, he finally broke free, with the help of the barbarian who was slicing the rug to shreds.

Assuming it was dead because it wasn't moving anymore, the cleric decided to go back and stomp on it for good measure.

Unfortunately, it failed its grapple check, and the cleric managed to avoid being rolled up for the second time.

No, no, no man! This is a thread about spoons. Animated carpets aren't even remotely related. ;)

Hehe... I actually did have an animated "flying" carpet in the same house, though this time it was the carpet that miserably failed its grapple checks!

However, the fighter managed to set it on fire, and since, at the time it was killed, it was hovering above the fighter, the fighter got pieces of burning rug rained down on her. I called for a reflex save... "1"... and the fighter ended up takign more damage from the carpet after it had been destroyed than it had ever managed to deal while still intact!

What did I tell you about talking about animated carpets?! You MAY NOT speak of them. Each of you will recieve 40 Spoonings from the Grand Archlich Spoon of Spikiness!

I rather like the idea of animate household objects. Reminds me of my good old days watching Beauty and the Beast. By "good" I of course mean "bad" and by "watching" I mean "turning on any movie I could find to sedate a hyper seven year old girl I happened to be babysitting." :weep:

Anyhow, I like the idea of a wizard who animates all his household objects just because he's to lazy to do things himself. The utensils could have a fly speed of 5ft (perfect), and he could command them to feed him. That would be interesting.

Where was I? Oh yes...people hate me. :D
