The greatsword fighter IMC wants to commission an animated tower shield. Can anyone here tell me if this is legal = Core? Can he really use his greatsword while this shield dances around him?

Thanks for any help.

DMG, page 218.

Reading the DMG solves so many problems... :)

Thanks, but the DM's guide is at the "play house". Where can I find it in the SRD?

Animated: Upon command, an animated shield floats within 2 feet of the wielder, protecting her as if she were using it herself but freeing up both her hands. Only one shield can protect a character at a time. A character with an animated shield still takes any penalties associated with shield use, such as armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, and nonproficiency.
Strong transmutation; CL 12th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, animate objects; Price +2 bonus.

There you go. :)

Yes, animated Tower Shields are legal.

He still takes all penalties associated with tower shields, such as the armor check penalty and the -2 to hit penalty. It's odd, but them's the rules.

I suppose it's to reflect the shield getting in the way of your swings while it blocks those of your opponent...
