ok here it is (sry for it being long):
My brother's paladin is fighting with a group of 5 roughly lvl10. They aboard a warship that they are passengers on (they where too "occupied" to find a proper transport). It gets ambushed by a rogue orc boat and the captain calls them to the front for a boarding party. The ship goes through its little routine of loading the ballastas, firing, calling to arms, etc. The battle unfolds and the orcs end up boarding the boat where the paladin is located. The soldiers are blocking his way (he's mounted onboard the boat) and they are holding off the orcs fairly well, leaving him bored :waits: . He, as a player, announces that he wants the good alinged soldiers to die quicker so that he can fight and get exp. And althroughout the battle he cheers and chuckles when one soldier dies ahead of him  , so he gets closer to fighting. Though he didn't do this in-game, I kinda feel that the thought is what counts. What do you guys think? :help:

As long as he doesn't acctually do any thing in-game, I don't think he should get an alignment change. It wasn't that the Paladin wanted any one to die, it was the player (so the thought does count, but the thought of the character, not the player).

He was mounted.... on a boat?
....push him off.

Really, I mean it. Good soldier were dying infront of him and he just watched. Tell him to get of his high horse and get in the action. Even with the soldiers blocking the way, he's a Paladin, they are all about bolstering their allies. At least cast a spell to help them or something....seesh.

At first, it sounds like the old "I chuck a grenade under the table" type of comment...but I don't think it is.

First off, I ask this question... are you so sure he is the one at fault? PCs should be the focus of the game, and if he's bored out of his skull because you have NPCs fighting NPCs, then you need to understand his situation. I assume that the others in the party were actually doing things like casting spells and shooting arrows, and thus action was forced into round by round instead of being narrative. Anytime the action is purely between NPCs, you should probably put away the dice and go into story teller mode to get the PCs back into the action.

The other thing is you are missing a rule... you can move thru squares occupied by friendlies...so he can hold his action until he sees someone in the front rank fall, then push through the intervening ranks right away and end his movement in the square the guy just fell in. The paladin should desire to be at the front line because he is a more capable warrior than the crew members, so he would naturally want to shoulder his way thru the press.. meanwhile the crew normally would just want to see the fight won, and so they will let anyone who wants to push forward in their place do so.

In short, if a player wants to be part of the action and there isn't a reason to keep him out, then let him in!
