If not I would like to work on one that had most of the skills and actions for every DC 1 - 20 at least. I would like to see DC's set for 1 ~ 40. |
| Roivas10-12-06, 03:03 PM | Check the DMG on page 31. It gives guildines for DCs of just most situations, who can accomplish such feats, and which skill is used. Keep in mind they are guidelines nothing wizards could ever make will be comprehensive because the game has too many variables, like players. I you want comprehensive try GURPS, but don't come crying to me when your head explodes. Actually do come crying to me, I'd like to see how that works without a head. |
| Abbacabba10-12-06, 03:18 PM | I know that nothing offical exists besides the lists in the books, but I didn't know if anything like this has ever come up on the boards before. I try to make my DC's as in line with the suggestions as I can but sometimes I'm uncertain how well I'm doing. I didn't know if some other DM's would enjoy sharing actions their PCs attempted and the DC's they set for them. Such as, in a previous game a player wanted to jump over a large number of opponents, targeting one specific target and land on him. I used the standard JUMP description, added in +5 for all the AOO's he would take before jumping(about 12), and during his jump(about 5). also Last session a rogue in the group help bolster morale in a town about to be attacked by using his BLUFF and PERFORM I used a BLUFF DC 25 for him to come up with "details" for stories and the Perform of 20 to make sure people actually listened. |
| Roivas10-12-06, 03:24 PM | Then you are doing fine. Making up the DCs of random things is the GMs job. The best method for pre-set DCs should take into account the player's skill modfiers, for an even challenge CR make it 10+PC's skill mod, a difficult one would be 15 and near impossible should be 20. I'm not going to be able to give a better guildline than that, the rest is up to you. Trust your own judgement and don't let the players bully you into changing your mind during a call, have them make their objections after game. A GM should be willing to compromise, but not midsentance. |
| Ad7m10-12-06, 08:54 PM | I personally think a list would be pretty helpful. Maybe not for every single skill or every DC, but perhaps some of the most commonly used skills. I always have a difficult time coming up with DCs for Spot or Listen checks if opposed checks are not involved. |
| Cifer10-12-06, 11:23 PM | also Last session a rogue in the group help bolster morale in a town about to be attacked by using his BLUFF and PERFORM I used a BLUFF DC 25 for him to come up with "details" for stories and the Perform of 20 to make sure people actually listened. IMO a bit too high. The easiest question to ask yourself is "would a normal human (commoner) have a chance of accomplishing this and how high would it be?" In case of your rogue, said commoner would not have been able to fabricate a story and tell it in a convincing way. |
| Roivas10-13-06, 01:40 AM | Lstien and Spot DCs that aren't opposed checks? For what, a waterfall? For something similar just set the DC at 0 and increase it by 1 for every twenty feet beyond the point the sound eminates from. |
| Kensan_Oni10-13-06, 01:50 AM | Here is how I figure out difficulties for any task. Assuming I am designing challenges equal to a parties level. Assuming that Party will maximize the skills they feel is important Things that should be easy but questionable: 8+Party Level (Gives nonmodified 80% chance. Better once magic and Charecteristics are included) Things that are difficult, but are within the realm of possible: 13 + Party level (55% unmodified) Things that are very difficult and should not be attempted by the sane : 18+ Party Level (30% unmodified) Things that only happen one in a million times: 23 + Party Level (5% chance Unmodified) Things that only a god should attempt: 28 + Party Level (-20% chance of success, unmodified) ... Of course, I was a Star Wars GM, so your milage may vary. |
| Ad7m10-13-06, 07:37 PM | Lstien and Spot DCs that aren't opposed checks? For what, a waterfall? :rimshot:Funny. I don't what your play style is, but in my games there are a lot of roleplaying situations where noticing something through hear or spot checks is important. Like noticing the one person in a large crowd who isn't wearing a red hood. Or hearing a small stream on the other side of a dense group of trees. I was simply saying there is a good deal of gray area when it comes to DCs for such tasks. I'm a new DM, so I haven't really set everything in stone yet. |
