So, when booting them is out of the question (for one reason or another, we have seen many threads on this problem) what are creative ways to teach them not to try-their-hardest to tick off the DM or the other players?

Any ideas, thoughts or comments for stuff in game or out of game? Any really bad suggestions in this list?

1. Take a new feat: "Bad Karma." Gives a -4 to any player's roll - DM's choice.

2. "Improved Bad Karma" - 10 " " .

3. Exp. Penalties

4. Gold Penalties

5. Take away problem weapon/feat/blah

6. Inevitables. Because they rock.

7. Players being followed by constables.

8. Let the other players decide what happens to problem player - usually they're quite fair. (Such as when someone blatently cheats?)

Any ideas?

Please?

Hmm... Depends on how they are annoying you.

If they memorise the MM, bring out stuff not in the MM or heavily modified.

If they cheat, make them roll in front of you and institute a policy of Con loss on every discovery of cheating.

If they really **** off the players, lift the ban on PC vs PC kills and let them hash it out.

The idea is to create rules that are fair to everyone, but one that no one else would trip over because they are being good little boys and girls.

if your game has broken down to the point where its players vs dm then the game is basically over. If they are being *******s at the table then they need to not be there. There is no excuse for "we can't kick them out of the group" to be the reason they are allowed to be disruptive. As a player if you are destroying the game then you need to go out have a smoke and see a movie, not be playing dnd.

as the dm you can just make them automatically fail every roll, and have even the lowest of commoners critical haymaker them and snap their neck. they can trip on a rock hit their head on the corner of a table and die. if they character is dead and they are still disrupting the game then its time to start killing the player AND the character (sarcasim for any parent groups out there)

you want to **** them off? kick them out of the game. they are no longer welcome to play. tell them to do boot up halflife or solgier of fortune or americas army where you can be a jerk and kill your own troops if you want. that place for that isn't at the dnd table.

Oh yes I have to agree with Val..I hear those things are wonderful for problem players.

Personally, taking it out on the character through DM fiat is just being petty and immature. It's also not likely to solve the problem, only make the player more disruptive. Then the whole game becomes nothing but a DM vs. Player ego contest.

I'm of the old school of thought that says you should just tell the player to stop being a jerk. If they get mad, they get mad. If they're mature enough, after an argument/fight, they'll either stop being a jerk, or quit the game of their own accord if they're not mature enough.

Much better than making them miss on every attack, even a natural 20, or giving them an unremovable curse or killing their character with a collosal size anvil from the sky.

Hitting them with The DM Stick.(If you don't have a DM stick, well, any stick will do). Not hard though. You go to jail for that. And they don't let you stay up to play D&D there.(I assume).

First, write down every offence the players commit.
A Halfway through the session, point out that the one with the most offences
only gets half-exp, and never enough to go up a level.

Give him a d6 with small pieces of paper that say 1 on on all the numbers(Except 1 naturally). Tell him that he'll be using that dice anytime he buggers you.

Right. I have said this many times on this board- YOU CANNOT SOLVE AN OOC PROBLEM IC.

Sit them down, talk with them. If that doesn't work, sit down with all the players, enlist their help. If that doesn't work, boot them or walk.

Know what the worst kind of situation is? Where everyone feels obligated to keep things civil but spew out backhanded remarks continuously. Passive aggressive, sarcastic jabs filled with so much implied vitriol that it hurts to be there.

Don't make that situation. Sit everyone down and, being the responsible one, say it. Say you hate this person. Find out how they feel. I bet they hate you too. Once the truth is out, real progress can be made. Even if progress means dividing up and never seeing each other again.

Ok, firstly, you might want to change the thread title, beause it's fairly obvious what word you're trying to use. You agreed to not use profanity and masking when you joined these boards. And despite the fact that you can say "ass" here, I don't think WotC approves of the word you have chosen to mask.

Secondly, why bother being vindictive? I'm sure it will provide you with a small amount of satisfaction for a short time, but all you will accomplish is making someone angry at you, which we all know is a noble and wise goal.

Heed the advice of Red Mage when dealing with people like that.

Get a large battle axe. Scratch the words "Murderin' Axe" into it. When someone asks why you have an axe, say "For chopping wood silly."

Whenever you say something important, have the axe in plain view and state what you want. Tap lightly on the act casually.

They'll lsiten.

Dude, it's just a game. End it, kick the player, whatever; life's too short to resort to petty smallmindedness ("oh, you missed again. Sorry. You hit an AC of 147? Sorry, that misses too." ).

If you absolutely must find some DM-savvy way to make the players realize they're being dicks:

1. They rescue the princess from the dragon. Turns out the princess is actually the dragon's shape-shifted mate, they're really into bondage, and the princess proceeds to kick their asses.

2. Have a fight where the bad guys are just as power-mongeringly-minimaxed as the pc's of the people who are ******* you off... and let the other players run them for you.

3. Have the treasure become exceedingly fragile, according to the main attack pattern of the party (not my intention, but in the last fight, the wizard hit the guy carrying all the treasure with a maximized Fireball... he failed his save and took 60 points of damage; the items failed, too, and all they found was a sack of ash where a bunch of wands, scrolls, and potions used to be).

4. If the PC's aren't being challenged by the fights, they shouldn't be getting any experience.

If you have more than four players in your group, say that you are downsizing the group to 4, because that's the ideal number (quote CR and EL calculation if they argue) and leave the problem player out of the party make up. Might mean leaving some of the other players out though.

call them up, the night before the game and say: you're too much of an annoyance & not enough fun. you are ruining the game for everyone. you don't have to come tomorrow night. TTFA, ta ta for now.

the more you **** them off, the more they will go after you. it is a vicious cycle and is hard to end without booting them. really, the only sensible thing to do is to boot them from the game, if this is REALLY not possible, for whatever strange reason, go crazy on them. as the song (http://www.somethingpositive.net/songgm.html) goes:

Rocks fall, everybody dies (change everybody to the disruptive player's PC);
Death comes raining from the skies...
