Any formula for a wizard's spells/level? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Is there a way to determine how many spells to let the wizard find/research, kind of like how treasure is metered out depending on group level? It just seems kind of pointless to just let them learn all available spells for a level, but at the same time heavy restriction isn't fun either.

As is stated right in the Players Handbook under Spellbooks:
Wizards add 2 spells to their spellbook each character level after first, these are free to scribe and so-forth.

Other than these, wizards may add spells from other spellbooks, scrolls, and such to their own spellbooks using the rules detailed in the PHB.
Read over the Wizard section, it tells you these things.

For the finding part, well, they are simply part of the treasure you get, in form of spellbooks and scrolls.

I think boozerker means to ask how to treat the spells the wizard would have found over the course of n levels of adventuring, other than the 2 spells he gets to add to his spellbook every time he levels up. That is a matter over which I haven't found any info in the PHB and the DMG, but maybe I failed my spot checks :)

Cifer, are you saying that all you have to do is count them as standard treasure? Like, for example, if I'm building a 20th level Wizard and I want to know how many spells his spellbook(s) has, I have to deduct their price (as if I had bought the scrolls) from the standard treasure for a 20th level character?

That would make sense, and I hadn't thought of it that way :embarrass

It's the bolded part I'm asking about. How often do they find other spellbooks, scrolls, and such? What personal guidelines do you use?

Edit: Gmork knows the question :D

Well if you are going strictly by the RAW there isn't any solid guideline or specific rule that states "A wizard should know X amount of spells at Y level." In fact the ability to learn a limetless number of spells is one of the wizards advantages of the spontaneous casting classes.
That said..this is what i do....
For Npcs and characters being brought in at a level other then 1st I generally stock their spellbook with 3 times the number of spells they can cast per day per level.
For example if a wizard could cast
4:1st/3:2nd/2:3rd/1:4th
I would stock thier spell book with
12 1st level
9 2nd level
6 3rd level
3 4th level
I find as a DM this gives me a nice selection of choices for a Npc to have during combat without bogging myself down with decisions. Nothing kills the flow of combat faster then waiting for the DM to decide what spell the Evil wizard is going to cast this round.

For PC wizards, other then their free spells, any spells they get from scrolls/spellbook is counted towards their total equipment value.
