| Divel Unwin01-26-05, 01:25 PM | I'm a HUGE fan of background music and sound effects for games. I feel I have a pretty large collection so far, but its still not enough. The best thing for mood music is obviously soundtracks for movies and games: The Abyss - creepy, mystical, some action music tracks Alexander - great regional music Bram Stoker's Dracula Carnivale (HBO series) - Creepy and Mystical Cold Mountain - music with subtle chanting Waterworld Crimson Tide Hero Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - mystical, action, good for temples too The Mask of Zorro Master and Commander - battle, war, military, action, dinner music The Passion of the Christ Gladiator - action, war, regional, great collection of music here The Dark Crystal Hamlet (Mel Gibson) - Very creepy and medieval I, Robot - Action, creepy Kodo Drummers (performance group) - great regional drumming, good for tempo Atlantis (Disney) Pirates of the Carribean - Fantastic swashbuckling music Baldur's Gate Baldur's Gate II Series of Unfortunate Events - creepy, fun, good for carnivals and creepy jokesters Sinbad (Dreamworks) - Lots of action music with a fun twist Butterfly Effect - Nice and creepy Mummy Mummy II Chronicles of Riddick - Action, military, creepy Icewind Dale The Day After Tomorrow - Action, creepy Planescape Torment Last Samuria - Good regional music, action The Missing - Creepy Diablo II Harry Potter (any) - Great for magic, mystical, humor, fun The Peacemaker - Tons of really long action tracks (Chase is my favorite) The Thin Red Line Troy - Action, military Van Helsing - Action Time Machine There are a lot of great tracks on these and if you have any type of sound editing software, you can merge alot similar tracks together to get nice, long, uninterrupted tracks that can play for 15-20 minutes before looping. I do this for specific character themes and BBEGs. Composers and groups to search for: Alan Silvestri Cirque Du Soleil Danny Elfman David Arnold Hanz Zimmer Howard Shore James Horner James Newton Howard Jerry Goldsmith John Williams The Medieval Babes Sound effects are much easier to find and use. Just google for them and you should be able to find just about any sound out there. As long as you're not trying to make money off of using them, you're good to go. A great way to preview any of this stuff is to go to Amazon.com and preview the tracks. I always go there when I suddenly think of a movie that I believe would have a good score. If I like it, I order it and look at others that composer has done. A lot of these are suggestions that others on these boards inspired me to get. Enjoy :D |
| Triludan01-26-05, 03:02 PM | rhapsody's legandary tales album is power metal and perfect for dnd background |
| eudas01-26-05, 03:05 PM | LOTR: FOTR soundtrack LOTR: TTT soundtrack LORD: ROTK soundtrack Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack Gladiator soundtrack Princess Mononoke soundtrack eudas |
| Chuckthedog01-26-05, 03:08 PM | You might want to look at The Planets, German Requiem, and for specific locals Tuvan throatsinging. |
| Aricandor01-26-05, 04:43 PM | Aww, somebody beat me to it, but the Baldur's Gate games have great music you could try to use. Gotta make some mis-matching for the combat music though, as it's divided into 1 to 5-second fractions. |
| scott64401-26-05, 05:10 PM | Anything from the dot Hack Project is excellent. Believe it or not, some classical music. Kitaro and Yanni produce some truly powerul sounds you could toss in the background. If you can find it (good luck), the soundtrack to the movie Dudes absolutely rocks; Steve Vai performs Amazing Grace in the last track and it blows your mind. |
| amishcommando01-26-05, 05:50 PM | Woah.....someone else actually knows what Tuvan throatsinging is? Ondar rules!!! But as for music, in addition to the existing comments..... Last of the Mohicans Soundtrack: atmospheric/wilderness Glory Soundtrack: Epic Battle/ Massacres Hunt for Red october theme: Good for military situations Mozart's Requiem: self explanatory Any Enrico Morricone Western theme: Showdowns Rurouni Kenshin Sountrack: Atmospheric/epic/battle Escaflowne Sountrack: Over the top battle |
| gm4hire01-26-05, 06:40 PM | The best CD ever for incidental (non-combat) situations is Music from the Odhecaton by Piffaro. You can go here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005YHZH/qid=1106782338/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-1014912-3339810 to listen to it. One of our players gave it to us for Christmas several years ago and it receives air time in almost every session. Given we run a lot of PC/NPC intereaction. . . Other situations: LOTR (any) Gladiator Conan the Destroyer (if you can find it) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Book of Secrets - Loreena McKennett Pirates of the Caribbean Master and Commander The Man in the Iron Mask Occidentally on Purpose - Gypsophilia Poi For Gadje - David Macejka - http://www.rishirecords.com/ Occasionally we'll use some tracks from the Matrix too. |
| jera01-26-05, 09:05 PM | one of the best cds for back ground music is kind of a mixture of church music evanescence and goth metal. the best one is NIGHTWISH but STORGARDE and a few others are good. ive got somthing i call the DND mix its got alot of different stuff from most of the bands from above but it also has things like the vandles and star wars the canteena song from A NEW HOPE but what the cds are basicly on the age group your group is mine teenagers (im 16) but things like hip hop and r&b r banned |
| Cullwch01-26-05, 09:57 PM | Let me put in a resounding vote for "Parc Oceanique Cousteau." Hard to find, but has some of the best ocean-themed music around. Whats great about this CD for background music is that it fits in with any ominous, mysterious, or "powerful" part of a campaign. Also, you get a good hour and a half of music from a CD that could be played almost continuously, depending on your campaign. Oh, and "En Paradisum" (sp) is just amazing. |
| Pay2Flay01-26-05, 10:07 PM | Shostakovich Russian composer with some very dramatic works. |
| Fogel the Magical01-26-05, 11:37 PM | Maybe you want to encourage moods? In that case play some sob music. A good CD for that is "Pops In Love" John Williams and the Boston Pops. Here's a list: -LotR's soundtracks (of course) -Emotional Classical Music (Romantic Period, hey even something earlier) -Good town music is available on the Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack -Enya, Clannad, and some other Celtic groups -Blackmore's Night (A Ren Faire band) That's all I can think of. Enjoy! |
