Any weather men out there? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys.
I'm just trying to add a little flavor in the game by throwing in various weather statuses. Y'know, stormy, snowing, sleeting. That kind of stuff. I know weather largely depends on were the PC's are at the moment. The land that they're adventuring in right now is your average temperate plains. I'm just wondering if anybody has any tables out there for average daily or even weekly weather. I'm fully aware I could just make up a table, but wanted to see if there was anything else somebody has created. Or if there are any other suggestions to determining weather for these guys on a weekly basis.
Thanks for the help.

Hopefully, something here (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=D%26D+weather+generator&btnG=Google+Search) can help.

Well, they're no longer being published, but if you can find the old Wilderness Adventurer's Guide, they had a fairly decent weather system in there. You can usually find one on e-bay for a couple of bucks. Additionally, if you have access to the old Dragon Magazine Archive there are some weather articles in there that I've used in the past. Unfortunately, I don't know if there are any downloads of these "articles."

Take care and have a great day....

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know I coul proablay find something on google. Or maybe I can't, whatever. I was just wondering if anybody had anything they used to determine weather in a campaign. Just looking for something other DM's might have used.

Ah, so you want a weather-determination table.

Personally, I don't bother with such things.

Even though such a thing would fit in with where I live and thus have the playuers familiar with it, I prefer weather as a conditioner instead of an extraneous detail.
For example, if I decide to bring rain into it, then I have some NPC moods go downhill, skies gradually get darker as the bad weather approaches, and, when it happens, I will play up the effects of weather (such as soaking those caught in it, lowering visibility, and the like).

Doesn't mean I won't consider the odd request. For example, my players are asking for me to throw a hurricane their way...and I'm seriously considering it.
So much so that I drew up a Disaster table. That includes hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, disease plagues, vermin plagues, invasions, 'death-winds', and the like.
Next time we play, I'll see if they want to take a chance on the Disaster table. :plotting:

Would you mind posting your disaster table? If it's not too much trouble that is...

I believe that there is a Random Weather Table in the DMG for 3.5. Not sure which page, but its in there.

PG. 93-95 in the 3.5 DMG is the section on weather in your campaigns.

There is enough detail in there to have different weather conditions, a chart for random weather, and a wind chart that outlines the affect of strong winds.

GO to 'weather.com' - pick a place that has a similar climate to the area they are travelling in. Look at the ten day forecast, and just follow it. Get some realistic weather patterns that way.

Personally I use WeatherMaster.

From automatic calculation of sunrise/sunset times, temperatures, wind speed and direction, cloud cover, atmospheric visibility, cloud ceiling - you name it, WeatherMaster delivers the rich detail you need as a moderator. With WeatherMaster you're a click away from one or a thousand days of weather tailored specifically to your campaign.

Automatic creation of complex weather events - You can be up and running in minutes using WeatherMaster's standard climates. WeatherMaster breaks each new day into individual weather events of varying type and duration (all based on flexible climate probabilities). Vital information accompanies each event - with particularly violent storms (such as tornadoes and hurricanes) displaying detailed specifications (ground speed, direction, diameter, etc.).

Event-based, not day-based weather - Cloudy skies don't end at midnight, and terrible storms can span several days. WeatherMaster creates individual weather events to fill every day - with the last weather event carrying over to the following day. This results in weather that affects player behavior in realistic ways; just because dawn brings fair skies and light winds doesn't mean the entire day is safe for sailing. Players will need to use their knowledge of the local climate and season - or ask someone who has such knowledge - to travel safely.

Batch weather creation - Create one day or a thousand days of weather at the click of a button.

Efficient Database storage - WeatherMaster records every day in searchable databases for future reference. Store decades of weather data in just a few megabytes.

Create weather for any number of worlds - Use WeatherMaster to store data for all your game worlds. You can easily create new weather databases or link to existing ones in seconds.

Built-in game log for recording the action - A moderator's journal allows you to track important game details. Who, when, where, why - never struggle to remember the details again. You can later print or export this game log to many formats (Rich text, PDF, HTML, Excel). The log also includes a search feature to help you find specific events easily.

I never had any trouble making a table with random weather for different seasons, but what always bugged me is that the days weather typically need to be related. I would roll storm one day, heat wave the next, then clear and breezy the following day. I wanted something that if I rolled "cloudy" made it more likely for the next day or two to have "cloudy" or "rainy" and then after a few days make it likely for the weather to change again.

Does anyone have a program or method for doing this? Does Weathermaster do it?

Yes it does. This is one of 2 programs I use for every campaign. WeatherMaster & Campaign Suite.

If you REALY want realistic, detailed data, try historical almanac data. For example:

http://www.wunderground.com/history/station/71265/2002/1/2/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA

Or since you said you wanted it to be in the plains,

Get some realistic weather patterns that way.I like this suggestion. Weather isn't as scattershot as most D&D tables indicate; it's very closely related to climate. For example, Seattle's rainy season is winter. Tokyo's is spring. They get comparable amounts of yearly precipitation, but Seattle is far more likely to be overcast in December than Tokyo.

If you want realistic weather patterns, steal from real life. Climate is far more meaningful to establish than weather, but emulating the complex mechanics of climate isn't worth a gamer's time.
