Buying & Selling Gear Faster http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=324563 The basic problem with Appraise, IMO, is the heavy bookkeeping from both the PC's and DM's perspective. Who really thinks it's worth it tracking every appraised value, and for the DM, tracking every "miss" and the random 50%-150% the PC is off on each gem. That's just a ton of time and effort for a very small part of the game, especially if you don't spend a significant amount of time RPing buying and selling goods and just go with the 50% rule to get in and out of the shops and back to the adventure fast. In fact, I don't even roll % on a miss. I just go with a "low value" miss (50%) or a "high value" miss (150%). I usually alternate those miss values. As DM, you have tons more important things to do than track a list of gem and jewelry values, real and appraised. But to get to something even more streamlined, I was thinking of doing a hierarchy of "you know the value of X gpv gems and below" based on # of ranks or Take 10 or Take 20 skill checks. Eliminates most of the guesswork and admin headaches. Any ideas on this, or some other system you suggest? |
