Lxarth 05-01-05, 01:43 PM	Well...they are very much like bears, in toughness I mean. I would say that the feather from an ourbear would be minimal, like a few copper at the most. If it is made into an inkpen I would say it is worth the same. After all they are no more deadly then a brownbear, and there would be people hunting them. Owlbears are just very aggressive, I would not value there feathers anymore then a normal feather, perhaps slightly more.

If there are a bunch of these things just milling about in the temperate woods outside the village/town/city/etc., I'd say that they're not worth much. Perhaps between 2-7cp each. I mean, who says you actually have to kill an owlbear to get their feathers. I'm fairly sure they would lose some feathers just randomly from their growth over the years, to just rampaging through the woods. Who knows, there might even be a sacred place nearby where old Owlbears go to die and that's where the feathers are gathered from. Or a trainer might have one in captivity and sells the feathers, which he gets from his subdued owlbear. Now if there aren't alot of owlbears around, or your in a totally alien environment (say for example a frozen tundra), then we might have to up the price. Maybe as much as 1-2gp per feather. The other thing to consider is how do folks know that these are indeed Owlbear feathers? I mean, they could have come from any large creature with feathers. Sure, the merchant might say they're Owlbear feathers but in truth they might be feathers from a giant owl for example. So the question isn't, "How much are owlbear feathers worth," the question from your angle should be, "How much do other people (NPC's) think they're worth?"

Ut-Napishtim 05-01-05, 01:59 PM	Hmmm... well considering they come from a rare animal I'd say a pound of good Owlbear feathers should be on par with a yard of silk which runs 10 gp (PHB pp. 112.) Of course feathers are pretty light, so I'd say from one Owlbear (that wasn't Fireball'd or something) they'd find one pound plus 2d8 ounces of sellable feathers. Of course that'd be retail so the PC's would be looking at about 5-10 gp depending on the roll and their Diplomacy check.
Guy Humual 05-01-05, 02:46 PM	What would NPCs use the feathers for? I tend to think that the only good use for them would be for fashion or for making into pens. I guess someone might want an Owlbear feather bed . . . but I doubt it. Your average inkpen costs 1sp, is made of metal and wood and has a much longer lifespan then your average feather quill. If someone can afford metal they're not going to be interested in feather. Mages might need them for writing scrolls however, suitable feathers for making into quills would probably go for anything between 3cp-1sp each. They may also be components necessary for making magic arrows . . . again I'd suggest about the same price. Fashion standards are going to be much higher, only the finest, brightest, and most special feathers are going to be used. If I was a wealthy flop I can't say that I'd enjoy owlbear more then peacock, while the owlbear is quite rare, the peacock is very colourful. I'd guess that owlbear feathers that look suitable for using in fashion would probably only sell for twice as much as peacock. For the hole lot . . . I guess un undamaged owlbear carcass would probably fetch around 20 gp.
gleep 05-01-05, 05:20 PM	As mentioned previously, it depends a lot on demand. Personally, I think their feathers would be too drab to be used much for decoration ("what's with that ugly feather?" "It's an owlbear feather!" "So? It's still ugly.") and too easily mistaken for something else anyway, there's nothing in the description about them being distinctive. The best bet is magical use for scribing scrolls, potions and the like. Even so, I'd put them on par with feathers from other raptors. A single owlbear has a lot of feathers. And there's probably a lot of them scattered around the wilderness anyway (the feathers, not owlbears). Besides, from the description it looks like there's a decent trade in live owlbears so getting feathers would probably be pretty easy. Alas, looks like the remains of that critter will be worth much less than the standard dungeon door. :D --gleep
