My group's previous DM discarded arcane components, and that worked quite well.

Long story short, we've swapped jobs and I recently surprised my old DM by inquiring if he had a 100gp pearl with him for casting identify.

I had always assumed the previous campaign had essentially passed out Eschew Materials as a bonus feat, but now I guess he meant NO materials. So far I have never pestered our resident firemage about guano.

Well I didn't set down any house rules on this subject, just modifying Leadership and allowing monster pcs. What should I do with arcane materials? I know I can't chuck materials entirely, true rez and stoneskin come to mind.

What should I do?

Expensive one shot components like this I make players buy/keep track of. Eschew Materials is meant for like the bits of bat guano or patchs of fur that cost next to nothing.
ESCHEW MATERIALS [GENERAL]

Benefit: You can cast any spell that has a material component costing 1 gp or less without needing that component. (The casting of the spell still provokes attacks of opportunity as normal.) If the spell requires a material component that costs more than 1 gp, you must have the material component at hand to cast the spell, just as normal.
I can full understand not bothering with the fur, poop, grass, rocks or whatever else could be picked up in the woods, but otherwise, make them spend the money. It's what a caster should be spending his loot on. It's liike the fighter assuming that since he's a fighter, and can use a sword, that he already has a sword... without actually buying one.

unless the spell description mentions that a material component has a value, I assume that whatever is needed to cast the spell can be gotten fairly easily and do not make casters keep track of them. Sometimes if I really feel like it I will make them all pay a few GP to refill their spell component pouches, but usually I assume the have what they need

A spell component pouch, mentioned in the equipment section of the Player's Handbook, provides all non-costly material components. In other words, if you have a pouch on you and can pull things out of it, any spell whose material component (if any) doesn't mention how much it costs is considered supplied.
