Are Elves and Dwarves slow learners or just thick headed? *drinks mug rootbeer* [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was just thinking about the effects of aging on my party and realized something. After only 35 years of life a human will gain a point of Int, wis and cha (losing str, dex, con) but an Elf has to age 175 years before they gain any further insight on the world. Ive always thought of elves as a learned race but maybe I should be looking at them as a more remedial race. Of course by this theory Halforcs would be the brightest crayon in the box!

LOL!

Too true.... But also half-orcs would also be the fastest detriorating race as well.....

I suspect it's mainly a balance thing.

Otherwise, the longer-lived races would vastly surpass the Int/skill points of anyone else. Seems realistic to me, but not very good for the game.

Yes the longer lived races gain the benefits of aging slower than the shorter lived races, but they also accumulate the penalties at the same slower rate.

What they do have is greater time available to advance in class levels, with the +1 ability bonus gained every four levels. Of course, just because they have the time to gain experience does not mean that they will take advantage of it.

Humans, as the longevious races say, may live shorter lives, but they live them to the fullest.

I wouldn't say they're slow, either in intelligence or in learning. They just have a longer view of the world than humans or half-orcs. When you know your natural lifespan is measured in centuries, it tends to give you a leaning toward taking your time to perfect your skills. Even then, the occasional "vacation" from your work, which for a short-lived human may be no more than a month before the need to get back to it sets in, could go on for years or decades for longer-lived races. There's less urgency, because there's plenty of time to work.

As to a game-rule standpoint, I assume you're referring to the stat changes for age. It's true, it is a little skewed due to racial longevity, but it's only meant to reflect the minor changes of age (the body slows, but we learn, and gain wisdom and confidence in our selves). With their longer view of life, it can take the elves and dwarves longer to appriciate life's lessons, but that doesn't make them slow learners.

Why does it have to be or? I think they are both slow and thick headed. Not to mention smelly and probably contagious.

So says Lukelightning the Hobgoblin.

If you're looking for an in-game rationale, it isn't that they're slow, it's that compared to humans, they're lazy. Elves rarely consider anything of more pressing importance than frolicking under the moonlight and practicing their long range shot. Dwarves would rather spend their time mining and smithing and drinking ale, and doing things the way they've always been done. Humans have become the dominant race in most campaign settings because they are far more ambitious by comparison. It's almost as though they know they're running on a short amount of time, so they rush to get things accomplished before they return to dust. Elves and dwarves usually view this behavior as reckless, but they can't deny its efficiency. Most elves would just rather spend the extra time to make sure they fully understand something before they act, and most dwarves are just naturally resistant to change. Half-orcs and orcs don't live as long, but their society isn't very accepting of new ideas that don't bring an immediate military advantage, so technological advances are more rare than in human societies.

The Brightest flame burns the fastest..:) Half-Orc by the way they are described in the PHB anyway seem to be a very passionate people, party animals and such.. almost sounds like they would make good gypsys.. hmm maybe a wandering gypsy tribe where the males were half-orcs and the females were half-elves..:) brutes and babes. :)
