| elven warriorXX05-13-05, 10:34 PM | here they are plaese tell me what i can change about them House rules 1. You can only take 10 on a roll 2. No fighting with other players, OR talking rudely to the DM 3. On no reason are you to level up your PC but you can pick spells/feats for your PC WHEN they level up 4. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-play 5. Ask me if you want to take a new class level when you PC levels up and what spells (if he/she can cast any) or feats/skills you what 6. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy) 7. No bad words or sexual content 8. You can make a new PC at any time but tell me before the session takes place and I will kill you PC or you can have him get tiered of fighting and leave 9. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes ect. 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. 11. | Flushmaster05-13-05, 10:45 PM | I'm not so sure about the not being allowed to level up your own PC part. Aside from rolling the new hit die in front of the DM, a capable player should have no need to have the DM do it for them and it will possibly be seen as either being a control freak or not trusting players not to cheat. Yeah, they should tell you what feats/skills/spells/etc they have so you can make any necessary adjustments to your campaign so that it poses an appropriate challenge to the group, but if there are any specific spells or feats that you don't want to allow then simply say which ones aren't allowed and why before the game starts. I stronglysuggest against this because it is usually a sign of an inflexible DM (not able to adjust to PCs doing something that they didn't specifically plan) and DMs must be flexible if nothing else(becaquse the PCs never do exactly what you think they will or should, and forcing them to do things isn't fun). The other stuff looks fine. Edit: some weird typo issue. |
| Board_Rider05-14-05, 12:39 AM | A lot of these are not really house-rules, but should be more common sense. With the whole "new PC at any time" thing I think it could disrupt continuity. |
| Lxarth05-14-05, 01:13 AM | 1. you can only take 10 on a roll What do you mean? Are you saying that there is no longer and rolles made and everything is considered to have rolled a 10? If that's that case you are retarded (no offense). 2. No fighting with other players, OR talking rudely to the DMI don't think I understand...if you mean "please, do not be disruptive during game" great...people should wait till a break or the end of session to discuss something that can sidetrack a game. But if you are meaning "no in-party fighting" then I disagree...sometimes PC's (like people) disagree with each other and sometimes just want to "duke it out". 3. On no reason are you to level up your PC but you can pick spells/feats for your PC WHEN they level up You need to explain this one...no one can level up? What? 4. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-play This is not a house rule, its common sense...you (the DM) need to remember this one, not the players. It's all to often a DM says "No, you can't do that..." to a PC, not the other way around. 5. Ask me if you want to take a new class level when you PC levels up and what spells (if he/she can cast any) or feats/skills you what Well...if there are some certain feats and/or spells that you want to ban you need to tell your players ahead of time...not after they decided to build their character around an idea and then have you say "no, you can't do that" 6. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy)How is this a house-rule?! 7. No bad words or sexual content This I feel is a bad "house-rule". I just found out, along with the rest of the group, that my girlfriends wizard character is gay and decided to let this info out when she seduced an Aristicrate women...Hmmm. Also, sometimes the BBEG will upset your precious little PC's and feelings will get hurt, it is at this time that "bad words" might be spoken for the enjoyment of the drama...but it's ok, just cover your ears. 8. You can make a new PC at any time but tell me before the session takes place and I will kill you PC or you can have him get tiered of fighting and leave This is dumb..."oh...im tired of playing this character now...I wanna play something else". "Sure bob, no problem, I'll kill your character for you and you can bring in your new one next week...okay?" 9. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes ect. No...you should ask your players if what you are providing them is good. Granted it is nice for a player to tell me ahead of time that they don't like the d20 system, but thats beside the point. 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. That "rule" is a variant one. Meaning if your going to use it inform your PC's, if you are not, then you need to tell them. it is already assumed that your not useing it because it a variant rule! 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ Again, fumbles are a variant rule and should not be inplace unless agreed upon beforehand, at which point the players would already know cause they voted for it...I use them cause my players want me to...ta-da! 12. I may let you take 20 on special occasions if the DC is real hard.So you are saying "I may play by the RAW if I think the situation is impossible anyway...cheerio!" |
| monkmania05-14-05, 01:50 AM | Lighten up, Lxarth... no need to throw names out at anyone... and i'm sure anyone who's called a retard would take offense. elven warriorXX: I'd have to agree with everyone else a lot of these are just common sense things... I suppose though on the whole no sexual content or bad words bit, that would depend on the age range of your group. You might not want to let players change characters/start new ones too frequently... for one, it's kind of ruins the flow of a campaign (as Board Rider stated) as the PC's need to develope comraderie or whatnot with the new party member, and two, it takes a lot of time to build a new character in terms of session time... Especially if the new player wants to play a spellcaster... Normally, people take a while when choosing spells, and imagine that for 8th level casters and higher who deal with many multiple spell levels. Our group has a rule where everyone can change once, and has to give the DM looooots of time beforehand to figure things out so we can work him into the script. Overall, I don't see much wrong with your rules, as they are your rules... And if you find one of them is going awry or is unpopular, you as the DM can always tweak things. It's good to clarify things in regards to common sense, like the whole "if your PC dies it's not my fault." If you put an ancient dragon in front of a bunch of level 10 or less PC's it's a good idea for them to run. If a player attacks it, it's his own damn fault for being an idiot with his char... It's important for a DM to be fair, and players to be accountable for their own actions. Happy DM'ing. |
| weasel fierce05-14-05, 01:55 AM | Nothing wrong with instant-kills. Other than that, it seems fine |
| Lord Ian Stark05-14-05, 02:03 AM | 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ Hmm, you can criticaly hit, but not fumble. All good and no bad. I guess it makes up for the players not being able to level up there own characters. What is that all about anyhow? You are either very strict or you have a bunch of munchkin players for that kinda rule. |
| Duvanok05-14-05, 02:20 AM | here they are plaese tell me what i can change about them House rules 1. You can only take 10 on a roll 2. No fighting with other players, OR talking rudely to the DM 3. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ 12. I may let you take 20 on special occasions if the DC is real hard 1. Taking 20's help move the game along and really, if the pc isn't being distracted/in danger ect. there is no logical reason why he coulnd't take a 20. 2. This is a table rule, not a house rule, but I agree. 3. Can't decipher this one. . .? 4. This one is not a rule, just a fact of the game 5. Not sure I understand this one either. . . 6. Again, not really a house rule. 7. This one is a table rule. 8. Again, not really a rule. 9. Not a rule, but I agree, you should always ask your players for feedback. 10. Agreed! A good rule. 11. I am a believer that if crits exist, so must fumbles, but nothing stupid like rolling damage against yourself or breaking your weapon. An AoO from the defender works for us. 12. Hmmm... House rules are generally designed to facilitate a clear understanding of how a specific action will be resolved. Stating "sometimes I will let you do something I normally won't let you do" is not at all clear, leaves too much open to DM interpretation and can make the player feel "picked on" if you deny him this rule but allow it for someone else. Essentially you have 4 house rules (possibly 6 but I can't decipher numbers 3 and 5 to tell if they are valid rules.) 1. No taking twenty ever. . . 2. Unless it's a special occasion. 3. No fumbles 4. No insta-kills These four are o.k. they wouldn't send me looking for a new group, but I would ask you to rethink the whole taking 20 thing, there is a reason that option is in PHB. ~Good luck |
| WCH05-14-05, 02:25 AM | Isn't critical fumble just a 2e rule which doesn't even exist in 3.5e anyway, so no need to house rule it? Or do you mean failure by 10 or more causing bad things to happen (like not only do you fail to open the lock, but the lock is now jammed)? If the latter, that's a terrible houserule; there need to be consequences for doing something unusually poorly, if such an activity is dangerous. If the former, good. Crit fumble on a 1 is a ridiculous rule... means that fully 5% of the time, even the best fighter in the world will drop his blade/stab himself/do something else stupid. Think about that for a second. One of the Drizzt books has him killing 1000 orcs. Now, I haven't read this book, but assuming they each took exactly one swing of one of his scimitars, he would've critically fumbled probably around 50 times. How heroic of him. Yeah... crit fumble on 1 = Worst. Rule. Ever. |
| Ut-Napishtim05-14-05, 04:26 AM | Think about that for a second. One of the Drizzt books has him killing 1000 orcs. Now, I haven't read this book, but assuming they each took exactly one swing of one of his scimitars, he would've critically fumbled probably around 50 times. How heroic of him. Actually IIRC you can avoid a fumble wtih a DC 10 Dexterity check. Considering Drizzt's Dexterity is probably around 22 he would've avoided 85% of those fumbles, so in the battle with 1,000 Orcs assuming 1 swing/Orc he would've actually fumbled 7.5 times. Perhaps not even at all if the dice were doing well for him. |
| erendor the True05-14-05, 04:34 AM | I suppose though on the whole no sexual content or bad words bit, that would depend on the age range of your group. Maturity range. Age never enters into it. The rest...8 seems a bit iffy, since having too many changes in characters could detract from the roleplay. On the levelling up thing, why not just let them do it themselves? Have them rolls any variables (hp) in front of you, but you can just check their maths and everything later, no need to do it for them. |
| yeknom05-14-05, 06:40 AM | 3. On no reason are you to level up your PC but you can pick spells/feats for your PC WHEN they level up I think what you mean is that the players can't raise their character level in anyway other than your game (like playing the character in someone else's game). Is that correct? If it is, what kind of players do you have that would go and do that anyway? |
| was_fired05-14-05, 07:49 AM | They seem fine to me for the most part. The only ones which confuse me are: 1. Does this mean you may never take twenty or roll? So in cases of a DC 16 where your modifier is +5 can you roll it for your 50% chance or are you stuck never making it? 11. Do you mean critical fumbles or just misses? If you want to avoided auto-missing I advise allowing for open rolling instead. Open rolling means that when you roll a 1 reroll at a -20, and when you roll a 20 reroll at a +20. This only applies to attack rolls and saving throws. I allow open rolling to be declared by either the player or DM at any point in time, but that's just me. 12. Stick to the RAW. Taking 20 means you failed 19 times. If you want you could just say that you cannot take twenty while searching for traps since I'm guessing that is the core of this issue. |
| feartheinvinceblehamster05-14-05, 09:31 AM | welcome to the boards, elf! these look fine except for the no leveling up your own character! always great to watch the new recruits grow up to be the sarcastic, cynical creatures that the longtime posters become. :D remembers when Santrilla first joined |
| Santrilla05-14-05, 09:34 AM | welcome to the boards, elf! these look fine except for the no leveling up your own character! always great to watch the new recruits grow up to be the sarcastic, cynical creatures that the longtime posters become. :D remembers when Santrilla first joined Heh. Love you too, feartheinvinciblehamster. Elven warrior XX, our DM once enforced similar rules on us... without telling us beforehand. We all started as NPC classes and then we got to first level and I said "I think I'll take a level in rogue." To which he replied "No you won't, you haven't been sneaking around at all yet." If you're going to enforce these rules, for the love of Gods, tell them beforehand. And make sure they're absolutely fine with them. Also, be prepared to explain how a player can pick up a level in something like wizard, sorcerer or druid. |
| weasel fierce05-14-05, 11:08 AM | Isn't critical fumble just a 2e rule which doesn't even exist in 3.5e anyway, so no need to house rule it? Nope. D&D have never had a fumble rule in its core material. |

| Ormiss05-14-05, 11:28 AM | Hi! 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. Does this mean that you do not use the optional "death from massive damage" rule or that you ban all spells and effects that cause instant death (assassin's death attack, death spell, power word kill, for instance)? I am curious, because, coming from other roleplaying systems, I have always found the absurd amount of "instant victory" spells in D&D to be a curse. However, in my opinion it is difficult to do anything about this without significantly altering the D&D rules. If I were to do that, I have no reason to play D&D rather than a home made system. Anyway, if that is what you meant by "no instant kill", then I would like to hear more; particularly about how you resolve this within the rules. |
| JKnight05-14-05, 12:05 PM | here they are plaese tell me what i can change about them House rules 1. You can only take 10 on a roll As opposed to taking twenty? Or on every roll? This is extremely unclear. Why couldn't a character take twenty on a roll when their is no repercussion for failure? 2. No fighting with other players, OR talking rudely to the DM Basically, I think you are saying that you don't want arguing at the table. But it is possible you mean that you don't want the player's CHARACTERS fighting one another? It would be nice to explain this to the players. 3. On no reason are you to level up your PC but you can pick spells/feats for your PC WHEN they level up I assume that you are saying that YOU will personally be in charge of leveling up the player's characters. Again, the way you have written this is highly confusing. 4. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-play Are you missing a period in your first sentence? "There is no rule on what you do." PERIOD? And new sentence, "That is up to you."? Overall, I don't really understand what this is saying. I'm going out on a limb and surmising that, in spirit, you mean that every one's characters are their own to control and not subject to the DM puppeteering them? 5. Ask me if you want to take a new class level when you PC levels up and what spells (if he/she can cast any) or feats/skills you what This seems like a reiteration of number three above. Can you try to edit this line so that it makes sense? 6. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy) Again, you might want to break up your sentences with periods. 7. No bad words or sexual content This is clear enough that your players will understand what you mean. I wouldn't think to tell you what type of game to run so I don't have much in the way of comments on the merits/flaws of running censored games. 8. You can make a new PC at any time but tell me before the session takes place and I will kill you PC or you can have him get tiered of fighting and leave There are obvious grammar errors with this one but the meaning is apparent enough. 9. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes ect. Nothing wrong with asking for advice from you players on what type of game they want to play. 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. You might want to define "instant kills". I assume you mean everything that is save or die. I don't think this sounds like a very fun game personally but if your players dig it then have fun. 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ Uhm. Okay. 12. I may let you take 20 on special occasions if the DC is real hard Whatever. I think that your "house rules" are difficult to understand and should be rewritten for clarity. I don't know if you are young or if English is your second language but your house rules would be more effective if they were written in a more professional manner. I got a headache reading your list... honestly I did. Consider the fact that the people replying to your thread have put more work and time into their replies than you apparently put into your house rules. Anyway. My comments are in bold above. JK |
| Aeromus05-14-05, 12:11 PM | I'm not touching this crap even with Drago Strange's 10 foot pole. |
| Lord Ian Stark05-14-05, 12:48 PM | Yeah... crit fumble on 1 = Worst. Rule. Ever. I disagree. If you allow people to always crit if they roll a natural 20 then how is it wrong. Now if natural 20's need to be confirmed, then so does a natural 1 to see if you critically miss. All a game of balance. |
| Bane05-14-05, 01:16 PM | My critical fumble rules are as follows: 1st, you need to roll a natural 1 on an attack roll. 2nd, you need to confirm, by rolling another attack roll at the same bonus that also misses. Power critical does not affect this roll, however, I have a homebrew feat that gives you a +4 on the roll to confirm a fumble. 3rd, you may make no more actions this round. (Bad if you fumble in the middle of your Spring Attack.) |
| Board_Rider05-14-05, 01:55 PM | I'm not touching this crap even with Drago Strange's 10 foot pole. Who is this Draco Strange? Brother to Draco Strang? And if he has a 10' pole does he have enough room to even weild it properly? NEW HOUSERULE PLEASE!!!! BTW, this is a joke Aeromus...not the houserule though...always room for those. |
| elven warriorXX05-14-05, 02:02 PM | thanks guys i have updated the rules now here they are 1. You can only take 10 on a roll if the DC is high and it will take a long time. For you to roll every turn (like climbing a 50ft cliff) but you are not allowed to take 10 in combat. but you steal roll die for fighting and other stuff 2. No fighting with other players, if you have something to disagree about then wait till the game is over. NO talking rudely to the DM(but talking rudely to the DM’s monsters is fine ^^) 3. I will level up you PC unless you want to level it up you self 4. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-play RP as you think your char could and don't worry about rolls, I will let you know if you need one. But after a bit of playing time you will know when to roll with out me telling you 5. Ask me if you want to take a new class level when you PC levels up and what spells (if he/she can cast any) or feats/skills you what. You DON”T have to take a new class you can level up as the one you are now. But still tell me the feats/skills you want 6. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy) 7. No bad words or sexual content unless it is fine with the entire party 8. You can make a new PC at any time but tell me before the session takes place and I will kill you PC or you can have him get tiered of fighting and leave. Please DO THIS SOME OF THE TIME NOT ALL THE TIME. 9. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes est. 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. But the “Coupe de grace” is allowed 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ only when you roll a 1 you will drop you weapon and it takes a turn to pick it back up. 12. I may let you take 20 on special occasions if the DC is real hard 13. You are not allowed to kill good NPCs as it will make you alignment to evil and you will be put in jail by the towns’ folk. 14. no trying to kill the other PC 15. evil alignment is not allowed as a PC alignment |
| Lord Ian Stark05-14-05, 02:06 PM | 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^ only when you roll a 1 you will drop you weapon and it takes a turn to pick it back up. :thinks: Isn't that an effect from a critical fumble? Also that rule is oworse than the average critical fumble where you have to roll to confirm a fumble instead of it being automatic every time you roll a 1. Oh well. I guess a Monk is good to go then. ;) |

| Callista05-14-05, 03:29 PM | 1. You can only take 10 on a rollNo taking 20? It does prevent people taking 20 whenever they can--but be prepared to find people re-rolling to re-try when taking 10 isn't enough, until they do get a 20. 2. No fighting with other players, OR talking rudely to the DMChange that: No talking rudely to anyone. The DM shouldn't be the only one who gets respect... for that matter, you respect the players, they respect you... it's a give-and-take. 3. On no reason are you to level up your PC but you can pick spells/feats for your PC WHEN they level upWhat do you mean by this? Players generally level up their characters by themselves when you've given them enough XP to reach the next level. If you wish to supervise the process and approve any odd bits of multiclassing, it's best to make a half hour at the beginning of the session to have players level up their characters while you're there. 4. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-playGood. Make sure to stick to this--railroading (forcing PCs to do something) is a real game-killer. 5. Ask me if you want to take a new class level when you PC levels up and what spells (if he/she can cast any) or feats/skills you whatI wouldn't put this much control on leveling up. I would say "Notify me of new classes, spells and feats" instead. Prestige classes, of course, are always DM-approved unless he says straight out that you can choose them freely. 6. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy)Be sure you keep to this, as well: Never take sides. If a player's characters die repeatedly, you may want to find a good min-maxer in your group to help him build his next one. Also, if you want to fudge a roll so that a character's death isn't in some insignificant battle, then do it. It's a good sort of "cheating". 7. No bad words or sexual contentMakes sense, especially for younger players. 8. You can make a new PC at any time but tell me before the session takes place and I will kill you PC or you can have him get tiered of fighting and leaveYour player should be able to role-play his own character's retirement. However, you are quite right to ask for notification if a player wishes to play a new character. I would also declare a starting level for a new character (usually it's average party level, or average minus one). 9. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes ect.Yes. Communication is essential. 10. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs.Makes sense. Getting triple-20'd by a kobold isn't very much fun. 11. Critical Fumbles are not allowed as they are not fair to you ^^Also a good idea. 12. I may let you take 20 on special occasions if the DC is real hardYou mightn't need this one--as I said, people may just keep on re-rolling. House rules I would add: --Late comers and no-shows --PCs killing other PCs --Paying for snacks and/or drinks --Paladin code of conduct --Which books are allowed. You're off to a good start. Proofread your rules so they're a bit clearer, though. |
| Aeromus05-14-05, 04:36 PM | Who is this Draco Strange? Brother to Draco Strang? And if he has a 10' pole does he have enough room to even weild it properly? NEW HOUSERULE PLEASE!!!! BTW, this is a joke Aeromus...not the houserule though...always room for those. Oh... I've been wtfpwndersizedOMGWTFBBQ.... I added an E so he couldn't sue me for trademark violations = P |
| Farland05-14-05, 05:46 PM | If you follow the book's rules on taking 10 or 20 you will find that they are quite balanced. So I don't think your house rules on taking 10 or 20 are good. |
| elven warriorXX05-14-05, 08:08 PM | thanks guys here are the fanal rules! House rules 1. You can take 10 on a roll if the DC is high and it will take a long time. For you to roll every turn (like climbing a 50ft cliff) but you are not allowed to take 10 in combat. but you steal roll die for fighting and other stuff. You can take 20 only if the DC is high you can not take it to find doors look for traps or any thing unfair 2. I will level up you PC unless you want to level it up you self 3. There is no instant kill in this campaign because it is not fair to the PCs. But the “Coupe de grace” is allowed 4. evil alignment is not allowed as a PC alignment 5. there are no new races only the ones in the players handbook but if you want to run a new race ask me first. 6. you cant have more then 4 deferent classes. 7. in a town that has a guild you can join freely but you have to get in by the leaders rules (like you may have to slay a dragon in a dragon slayers guild)^^ 8. You HAVE to ask me before you take a Prestige Class and have the requirements for the class. Table rules 1. There is no rule on what you do that is up to you. You can do anything you can do in real life and some things you can’t so feel free to role-play. RP as you think your char could and don't worry about rolls, I will let you know if you need one. But after a bit of playing time you will know when to roll with out me telling you when to roll and you choose when you want to roll(like if you want to search for items) 2. No fighting with other players, if you have something to disagree about then wait till the game is over. 3. I am not out to get any one if you PC dies it is not my fault (unless you want me to kill you PC of for the story line or to take out a bad guy) 4. No bad words or sexual content, unless it is fine with the entire party OR if no one in the group is under 13. 5. tell me if you want your PC to kill him self with a bag guy(like jumping in to a pit for lava wale holding on to him) or to leave the game or go to ret 6. Tell me what you want out of sessions like more role-play, more combat, more jokes est. 7. if you get a new D&D book and want to use the stuff in it tell me and I will take a look 8. if you have an idea for a spell/class/feat/weapon/item please tell it to me and I will try to put it in the game if it is fair to other players. |
| Aeromus05-14-05, 08:12 PM | I am a horrid speller, typer ect... but jeez man... at least "try" and proof read... that hurt my head reading. Your rules are already rules for the most part. I'm getting the impression you haven't read the books completely...or are very very new. |
| elven warriorXX05-14-05, 08:20 PM | i am sorry i don't know english that well |
| Aeromus05-14-05, 11:09 PM | What is your first language? And, have you completely read the srd/books? I for the most part find all the rules if used correctly create a very unique balance. My only "true" rule addition is: If you roll a natural "1" on an attack roll, you provoke an AoO against the defender of the attack. and the only rule I remove is "Knowledge Monsters" That is all. |

I hope I don't sound mean to you. I'm just giving advice (but you know that so...). Anyways, let's see. Good, you've split up house rules and table rules. You're starting to get it. However, you need to fully understand the rules before you try to change them. House rules 1. Still not good. This is where you seem to misunderstand the rules. Your restrictions on Take 10 and Take 20 make no sense! Take 20: It is NOT unfair for a PC to take a long time looking for a door or something harmless. It's common sense! There's no reason why a PC can't simply reroll until he gets a 20 anyways! Take 10: If you are only able to use it when the DC is high, then it becomes nearly useless. Take 10 is for casual, careful skill checks without harmful consequences. Read the rules on Take 10 and Take 20. Understand that they are simply there to make things simpler and easier. There are rules on where you can and cannot use them already in place. I highly suggest not trying to restrict them, as many agree that they already make sense. 2. Strange, but okay. You should always encourage players to level up their own characters though. 3. Insta-kill is a variant rule, isn't it? Do you mean the "save or die" type spells? In any case, would that mean the enemies can coup de grace your PCs? 4. Good rule (pun intended) 5. Good. That should be happening anyways. Players usually like choosing non-core races after a while, but the DM needs to know. 6. Prestige classes too? I've never seen anyone do that, but I think I've seen high-level NPCs with a bunch. How many classes did Drizzt have? Anyways, this rule is good. 7. Not a House Rule...that's usually how things work. 8. Yep yep Table Rules: Most of these are common sense or good rules. 5. Its wording is strange. This is D&D! How could someone get AROUND telling you what actions their character makes? DM: Okay Rothgar, now that the evil lord Mortevold has been slain you see- :Rothgar player: What? I don't do anything. My character died. DM: What? When? :Rothgar: in the second round! I grabbed Mortevold and jumped into the volcano! We both died! DM: Second round?! We just spent an hour fighting this guy and you say you killed him in the second round? Why didn't you tell me? :Rothgar: You didn't say I had to. DM: Oh yeah. 6,7,8: Good!!! |
