I am looking for a monster similar to the Orcwort tree monster in MM3 to throw at my 6-ish level party. However, I haven't seen any in the MMs.
I want it to pass as a normal tree, until they get up close to it, so things like shambling mounds and needlefolk and Treants are out.
Thanks in advance.

Use a treant, take away its ability to animate other trees, give it 4 more hit dice.

There you go.

Treants can't look like normal trees? I definitely let them.

I think a Treant with an assassin vine on one of its limbs would be real cool. Just like a Choker wearing a Cloaker.

Yellow Musk Creeper in the Fiend Folio. Advance it a little, throw some decent Yellow Musk Zombies in and change the appearance to be slightly more tree-like.

I totally let treants look like trees.
A treant has something like a +16 hide among normal trees.

If you let the treant take 10 on its hide check, it cannot be seen by any first level NPC.
If you have a roll-off between a treant and a 1st level ranger with WIS 14 and maximized spot ranks, the treant still succesfully hides 75% of the time.

The SRD says Treants look like trees... so why not Treants?

A treant has something like a +16 hide among normal trees.Unfortunately, it has a base -9 to hide. So, in the end it has a net +5 hide. Not very good. I don't think it should have a very good 'hide' ability because it would be hard to not notice something 30 feet tall. Of course differentiating it from a normal tree should be quite difficult.
