| Worshiper_of_Moradin08-20-07, 05:38 PM | I'm planning doing an game that is going to envolve infiltration and most of the players are playing Metal Gear Soild now so I will expect them to try it. <.< Are there any rules on sneaking up behind someone and doing that? Should I just use the rules for suffocation with a strengh check to make sure they can hold em? |
| Stormbrand08-20-07, 05:48 PM | Well much of what Snake does is snap their necks, so you could allow Sneak Attack damage when grappling from surprise. Strangleholds could simply be the subdual version. Perhaps require Improved Unarmed Strike or something similar for those techniques. |
| wrecan08-20-07, 06:01 PM | Strangling is one of those things that runs headlong into the abstract nature of the hit point system, much like called shots. The closest the ruels come is grappling, followed by a pin (invoking the "can't speak option"), followed by nonlethal damage until your target is unconscious. If you attack with surprise from an adjacent square, you can begin the grapple on the surprise round, pin (and silence) him if you win initiative, and then strangle him as long as he doesn't beat your grapple checks. Once he's unconscious, finish the strangle with a full-round coup de grace. Such a character would want high initiative, high Strength, high Hide and Move Silently (and thus High Dex). Monk with the Stealthy and Power Attack Feats is ideal for this tactic. |
| Vharuck08-20-07, 06:04 PM | Good rules to use in order to represent suffocation are rules for drowning. But I would require a successful pin to start it, at the least. |
| bane_of_cuthbert08-20-07, 06:06 PM | The 3.0 book Song and Silence has rules for using a garrot which could be adapted to 3.5 if nessessary. I'd assume the rules for using your bare hands would be much the same but deal less damage (or whatever garroting does, I don't have the book in front of me). |
| dknight10008-20-07, 06:19 PM | one way to mimic it would be to use the suffocation rules, except that the character does not get to take a breath before starting - i.e. they dont get a number of rounds = 2x con mod before starting to drown, instead they have to start making saves immediately. |
| Heros_Backpack08-20-07, 06:20 PM | The rules for strangulation and garroting were updated to 3.5 in Dragon 355 - it basically works as an extra option during a grapple, and an opponent can hold their breath for up to 2 rounds x Con modifier (iirc). After that they follow the drowning/suffocation rules (drop to 0 etc). |
| Zerchai08-20-07, 11:03 PM | I feel a special shout-out to the Reaping Mauler prestige class is in order here (Complete Warrior). I don't have the book right in front of me, but one of their class features is a strangle hold that basically says if you pin an opponent for three consecutive rounds, they die. |
| Dragonsblood08-21-07, 02:01 AM | Move silently and grapple damage. If they cause enough grapple damage to knock the guy unconscious, flavor the attack by saying they strangled the NPC. |
