Argh! Awarding Xp gives me a headache, please help! [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-06-05, 11:13 AM Hey guys, I've a problem here and I'm not sure how to award Xp. First off, I'm not even DMing this particular campain but the DM is relying on me for help doing stuff because apparently I am more experienced with the game.

So here's the problem. Yesterday, in one session, we had technically 5 different encounters. The first three we did not kill anything, but because we handled the situation the way we should have (according to the DM), he says that we'll be getting full Xp for those encounters.

First, we caught some felldrakes that got loose and were charging though a marketplace. One was CR 2 and the other CR 1. Looking under the mixed pair entry of the CR chart, that was a CR 3 encounter. We were a party of 6 1st level characters. Without the charts on me (I don't own the books and this internet connection is WAY too slow to check the SRD) I think that is 900 Xp. Now is that Xp given to each of the party of is it divided up amongst us?

Then we had to round up 5 shocker lizards that got loose in the destruction. I have no clue what the CR rating of that was.

Then we were waylaid in the forest by 12 goblins and 2 blues. We held them off (it is illegal to kill them as we were still in the city limits) until the town guard came to take them away.

Then we fought a wererat in hybrid form and 10 moon rats, and it was a full moon. Again, I have no clue how to rate that challenge. A wererat is CR 2 (I think) but the DM says he made it stronger because there was 6 of us, and then there were all the rats who were more powerful in the moonlight.

Then finally we fought 2 flesh harrowers in a little cave. Both of those are CR2 individually. What would they be together against 6 1st level characters?

If you've read this far, thanks for putting up with me. I normally just give people what I feel is an appropriate amount of Xp as an award but this guy wants to do it by the books.

07-06-05, 11:21 AM The xp listed on the table is the total xp to be awarded, divided by the number of party members to determine how much each one receives. The standard way to work up experience is to award it based on the CR of each individual monster, not based on the EL of the encounter.

In any event, the xp tables aren't available in the SRD, they're only in the DMG (they aren't open content).

07-06-05, 12:42 PM Never add CRs together. Award xp for each creature individually.

So in encounter 1 you award the XP for a CR 1 and then award XP for a CR 2.

For encounter 2 you award xp for each shocker lizard individually

For encounter 3 you award XP for each goblin individually

For encounter 4 you award XP for the wererat and the moon rats serparately

For encounter 5 you award the XP for each Flesh harrower separately

And the XP is divided among the 6 PCs.
