| superjesusfromthefuture05-07-07, 09:19 PM | I think you would have to be a little more specific than that. It also depends on where its coming from. You cannt just roll some dice for a town, decide it has a standing army of 300 varied troops when its population is only 400. I will be glad to help if you can make a more specific question. |
| georgebartonis05-07-07, 09:45 PM | No I mean like the average village has a population of 401-900 lets say a village has 900 people. Is there a way to roll say, 1d6-2 x100 and that is the number of soliders it has? |
| Brian_Link05-07-07, 10:30 PM | Well in times of crisis I'd say 25% would be active soldiers. This of course is assuming that 50% is women(women adventures not included), and of the remaining 50%, 25% are too young, and 25% are too old. During times of peace though, I can see 4% being city watch, which is what the first responders would be. If the citizens are more lawful, then you could probably do with less, and vice versa. Ya this may not be using dice, but this seems like a fair representation, unless someone can find anything in the books. |
| superjesusfromthefuture05-07-07, 10:34 PM | i would have to say that 10% of the population would be active members of the militia. 1 out of every 50-75 people is a full time city guard. Everyone else would be non combatants. This would be for a small town. A metropolis would have a massive standing army, then a militia and then town guard but that isnt what your talkinhg about. |
| Dire_Rhino05-07-07, 10:56 PM | Well, if you're talking about a culture where constant danger is the norm, you could look to the "orc" entry in the MM: BAND: 30-100+150%noncombatants+1 3rd-lvl sergeant/10 adults + 5 5th-level + 3 7th level. This makes for a town of 278. So multiply by 3 for a town of 900 (which will allow less combat-focused society). 300 militia (War1). 30 sergeants (War1/Ftr2) 15 lieutenants (War1/Ftr4) 9 captains (War1/Ftr5/PrC1) 1 general (War1/Ftr5/PrC4) Broken down by %ile, that's 33% militia (all the strong, able men in the village) 3% sergeants 1.7% lieutenants 1% captains 1 general which gives us roughly 6% of a town's populace as career soldiers, the rest peasant levies. |
| Empiro05-07-07, 11:14 PM | The DMG (page 138) has very specific rules regarding this. The gist is that during times of peace there's one fulltime soldier/guard for every 100 people, and one militia/conscript for every 20 people. During war, this might be higher, but even then, it probably won't be as large a percent as the orc band, which is more of a warband than anything else. Published adventures, such as the Red Hand of Doom, support this. In there (where they know they're about be attacked), the ratio is about 1 in 8. Keep in mind that a large number of the troops are actually commoners, not warriors. |
