Not to turn this into a 101 thread, but...

9. The new decoration on the head of the king's septer.
10. Being used a 'glass eye' by a blinded cyclops.
11. Under a lake, protected by a monter.
12. Buried by pirates long ago with only a tatered map to lead the way.
13. A child's toy
14. In the clutches of an evil team of adventurers who are trying to sell it on the black market.

15. One of the party members. Sounds odd. It was a idea I had for one game. A artifact was 'transformed' into someone. The person was given memories, a history. Everything. But it wasn't /real/. When the 'person' dies, the 'artifact' creates a new life. Sounds strange eh?

16. A wizard lost his hand and has the artifact in its place (which well looks like a hand)

17. Inside a Dragon.

18. Hidden deep in the Underdark, worshipped by some Drow or other creatures.

19. Inside a poem.
20. In its own demi-plane, reachable only by a specific portal located in the depths of a enchanted pool in the deepest, darkest vale of the Forbidden Forest.
21. Being used to level one of the table legs in a ramshackle tavern near the warf.
22. Shrunken down to an extremely small size and dropped into the sea, where it was stuck in a oyster and resulted in a pearl. The pearl was later recovered and used to make a necklace that graced the bosoms of a line of princesses. After the fall of the kingdom, the pearl eventually found its way into a treasure horde where a party of adventurers found it. They then promptly ground it up to be used for an identify spell. Now the artifact is inside some archmage.
23. The artifact is buried inside a huge stone pillar that holds up the roof of a vast cavern. Removing it would cause enough damage that a million tons of rock will fall.
24. Old Uncle Mathers has it, and has actually left it to one of the party members in his will, as its part of the contents of an old trunk.
25. It is lodged in the dreams of a sleeping great wyrm with 40 class levels.
26. It was actually tossed into a volcano millennia ago, but has since popped back out and is now contained within the chunk of obsidian that a primitive tribe of swamp people worship as their god.

Well within enemy territory (or formerly enemy territory) in a subterranian bunker.

**Explanation- It was captured and brought there years ago in an attempt to keep it under enough guard to be forgotten over time and thus, no longer be a significant threat against a perceieved enemy.

Here's another possibility: it's in the center of a temple held up by a hundred Caryatid Columns. The columns are programmed to attack anyone who tries to take the artifact, starting with the nearest but with more columns joining the fight as their sisters are struck down. If too many are animated, then the temple collapses because nothing is holding it up anymore.

Caryatid Columns are fun :evillaugh

46. The PCs already have the artifact and don't know it (perhaps a ring-family heirloom, a cloak, earings, a necklace...)
47. The artifact is the 'powersource' for a Temple of Nerull.
48. Buried deep inside a Elven Druid Grove that is also a buriel ground for the elder druids that /cannot/ be desecrated....
49. Stuck and hidden in the Ethereal Plane.
50. Buried in the glacier with Levistus.

51. suspended in mid air over an erupting volcano in a magical lightning storm surrounded by towers full of skeletal archers with flaming arrows and ghost sorcerers, and the volcano is occupied by a fiendish roc and it's half-fiend giant eagles who also have sorcerer levels

52. inside the digestive system of a dead god's body on the astral plane

53. half-way through a portal between the nine hells, and mount celestia, being the subject of a tug of war match between an army of devils and an army of celestials

54. deep inside nerull's toilet

55. the artifact is hidden on a farm, and it looks like a cow, and it's power can only be unlocked by milking it

56. underground, balancing in the centre of a razor blade bridge over a bottomless pit that's on fire, and it's raining greatswords and vials of acid, and the walls are getting closer together and are covered in precise indents which, when they come together, form ladder to the surface for 30 seconds before crushing everything, and wraiths are flying all around
