I am curious what my fellow DMs are using. What are some of the nastiest most vile items or artifacts you have placed in a campaign? :D

Hmm, nastiest, most vile artefacts?

Well, most of the artefacts I've come up with and put in the game are of a neutral bent, their nastiness more a part of how they're used.

There's the Orb of Gnosis (which the character's currently have, but have no idea how to use) that will answer ANY question put to it fully, understandably and truthfully. The man who led the PC's to it wanted to ask it how he could destroy a nation without harming a single innocent and do it within his lifetime. Noble goal, but he's dead now, and the BBEG knows the PC's have this artefact, and wants it for himself. The artefact itself is benign, but the uses to which it could be put are, well, endless.

Then there's the Sword of Darkness, which is more a truly evil artefact. It was once used to slaughter two armies, and turned the marshes where it did this into an eternally-burning negative-energy sink which reanimates anything that dies inside it as a powerful undead.

I'm about to put in an eldritch machine for my party
Those in my Eberron campaign don't look
I'm creating one that can change one energy type to it's opposite inside a certain radius.
This means Fire becomes cold, and Life becomes Undeath
I'm blaming the mournlands on an earlier version

Meatflute (Strong Necromancy, Evil)

This flute appears as a small instrument no more than six inches long, at first glance it appears be made of strangely shaped ivory, however it is actually something much more sinister. This flute is made out of the long spindly index finger of the elven lich-king Yelram, taken from him by the black dragon Tirrax. The finger longs for it's master and every full moon it attempts to return to him (The flute has the considerable power of twisting those around it, similiarly to the "One Ring" in that it finds ways to get back into it's masters hands in the most literal sense).

This flute has the power to reanimate the dead with a single toot (as per the create greater undead, 19th caster level, with the stipulation that a freshly deceased carcass be available for the ritual. The carcass is consumed by this ritual, no other materials are needed). The created undead are under the control of the player of the flute. This power may be used an unlimitated number of times per day.

Not mine, but my DM made this and I never learned the name...

"Diamond Eye" - Shifts alignment curses set by the gods to (Any) Good. Must jam the point into forehead to work. Fort Save DC 18 to prevent -2 Con (I failed) and Fort Save DC 18 (20 if previous save failed) -4 Int (failed again). Gains +4 Cha which diminishes to +2 Cha after 1 week. Did I mention that the gods deemed me evil for protecting myself in a barfight that a.) I wanted no part of and b.) couldn't escape so I had to use lethal force (tried subdual for the first and second attacks I made, rolled 3 and 1).

Did I forget to say that my DM was (and still is) an arrogant pr*ck

Players from Zwolle do not read this.

I've based most of my campaign around an artifact called "The keys of Yog-Sothoth". Its an evil artefact designed to destroy the world. Though the players do not know this as of yet. It consists of 8 separate parts. A chalice, a funnel and six taps that fit on top of the funnel. If its assembled the artefact enhances all arcane magic by a thousand fold but it will also enter the mind of every practiser of arcane magic and pollute their minds with a desire for absolute power. The short term result is a huge arcane war that will destroy most of the world and in the end only a single magician will remain and quest in folly for absolute domination. Lead by the artefact he will find the magic spell he needs. But this again is a deception. Not only will this spell consume them. It will set free the outer gods who will bring chaos and darkness back to the multiverse.

My characters will soon find a major artifact version of the Rod of Wonder. It has in total more than 100 effects, due to some effects causing things like a random target gaining a random class ability, warp touch on the target or user (50% chance of either), and suchlike. It's gonna be FUN. Also, I am dismayed that some of you cannot spell "artifact" correctly, despite that it's in the thread title.

I don't even think anyone in my group knows about these boards, but just in case......

The Aunarium (which actually is being used as a distraction in my upcoming campaign) is an elven-crafted bowl thousands of years old. It was originally designed to provide an endless supply of clear, cold, pure water after a vision predicted that the major supply of water in the area would be devastated by some magical disaster. However, in crafting the bowl, the elves brought about the disaster. The crafter was possessed during his work, and the demon, taking instruction from Lloth, corrupted the bowl so as to issue forth poisoned water, capable of painlessly and undetectably killing any who drank the water within one day. In order to activate the item, a single drop of water needed to land on the sigil of the crafter, which was placed on the bottom of the bowl. After it was activated the first time (to demonstrate that it would be capable of putting out enough water to sustain the population) it was stolen and thrown into the lake that provided water to the community. Everyone died, but the item was taken from the lake, stopped from producing its poisonous waters, and soon after lost.

Me, I'm going to throw it into the Riftlake.
