After a TPK from last week due to some indescretions from my evil aligned group (7th lvl party, 5 members, who wanted to have some 'fun' with a 17th lvl ranger harper...oh well lets just say it didn't end too fun for them)

Anyway, I have asked them what the wanted to play and the Assassin campaign idea came up and everyone was keen for it. So as DM I have to set up an assassin campaign starting at 12th lvl.

Not a problem really but I am interested in what others have played in the past as far as Assassin campaign is concerned and any pit falls, traps, intruiging political plots or joys has one come across DMing or playing in an Assassin campaign.

My players, you know who you are, I would wish you not view this post further. I know you guys are reliable....well except Jason...

I saw this posrt a few hours ago but was unable to reply (was at college)

anyway.

Running a campaign where the party are Assassin type characters is something on my todo list, once my current campaign is over i will run something like this just as a breather.

firstly its good to have a well though out setting for this, with detailed world, organisations, officials, city running, etc. personally i enjoy using the Forgotten realms as there are a number of organisations you can use; shadow thievs of Amn, night mask, fire knives, etc plus well fleshed out nations and organisations.

if the party started much lower than level 12 maybe somewhere around level 2-5 the start of the campaign could revolve around gaining membership to a thieves guild and then an assassins guild.

once the party have joined the guild through proving themselves with small tasks they will be introduced to the guild proper.

if you start at level 12 the PC's would already be experienced members of the guild. maybe start of with some simple assassinations.

political assassination can be fun, the party would have to find away to destroy the carear of a certain politicion without any traces back to the guild.

maybe the campaign could revolve around another guild moving into town and an inevitable guild war breaking out.

running a campaign for either good or evil PC's can be very similar, the most notable changes are; who hires the PC's (if any), the methods of the party and importantly, the parties motives and goals.

edit: by the way, nice LoTR spoof in your sig :D

The organization with the “assassin” arm doesn’t have to be a crime syndicate. Old episodes of Mission Impossible would be a good place to draw adventure ideas, even if you don’t add a political flavor to the mix.
