At what point does cleverness simply turn to stupidity? [Archive] - Wizards Community

See title.

By the way, if anybody from my online campaign (you will know my screen name) sees this and uses this knowledge, I will turn their character into a Level 1 Wizard without spells.

Anyways, at what point would your cleverness and creativity for an encounter simply turn dumb? For instance, I have the first dungeon's boss as a ghost Cleric. He is still on this planet because he swore to his leige to protect the dungeon's treasure (what the PCs need), if they take it would it simply be stupid to have him come back just after they kill the BBEG and he'll become the true final boss?

Another example, I thought it would be a fun idea to have a Fighter be dual-wielding Fullplate. Yes, I know, this breaks the rules, but it's all in good fun. I mean, he is proficient with the Fullplate after all because he's a Fighter. :P

But seriously, should encounters be creative and clever within the confines of the rules, or is it okay to bend them a bit to make a boss silly (but tougher) and have fun with the players? And with surprises for the Players (for instance, my ghost Cleric) is there a point when they can be too surprising and too ridiculous?

Is it possible? Easily, and I think you've done it.

The ghost cleric thing is ok, especially with some kind of powerful magical aura in the area, or by some blood oath between the cleric and his diety. You could turn it into a very viable plot device. (kinda like the knight guarding the holy grail's chamber at the end of Indiana Jones: Last Crusade), but make him undead.

Dual Wielding Fullplate? I don't get it... you want him to swing 2 suits of full plate one in each hand at your PCs? Or you want him wearing 2 layered suits? Niether makes much sense. If you want some guy in a battlesuit of some sort like a middleages Mechwarrior then make up some Gnome artificer's contraption like the tank thing in the DMG.

The D&D game is made for people to custimize it and for the players and DMs to have fun.

I think (though not certain) he is refering to the fact that the further up the two weapon fighting feat tree you get, the higher the dex requirement, and the full plate has a restrictive max dex rating.

If that is the case, I believe it is very possible. The max dex rating of armor (to the best of my knowledge) only limits the dex bonus applied to your armor class, and to any skill affected by the armor check penalty. I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply to other things like reflex saves or feat prereqs. So it is easily possible to have a high dex to qualify for feats, while only being able to apply one or two points of it to your armor class when wielding restrictive armor.

Does it say anything in the feat about being restricted to medium or lighter armor? While some class features may have that kind of language (the ranger comes to mind) I am not sure if the feats themselves are armor restricted.

It does have this restriction listed for the rangers class ablity, but not in the actual feat itself. Thus a fighter with the feats may use TWF, while a ranger who took it as her fighting style may not.

No onto the OP. There is nothing wrong with using rule 0 to spice things up with your encounter, unless, it makes the game less fun for your PCs. A DM should always be consciouse about whether or not the other players are having fun at the table. That above all else is what is most important to the health of your game.

As for the dual-wielding Fullplate I literally meant just that. Not wearing two suits of it, but wielding one in either hand... I mean, if I were fighting somebody in that like real life I would laugh at the hilarity of the situation, but only before I got smashed into the ground by them.

The ghost cleric thing is ok, especially with some kind of powerful magical aura in the area, or by some blood oath between the cleric and his diety. You could turn it into a very viable plot device. Well, I'm playing 3rd edition. I don't know what it's like in 3.5, but for ghosts they are typically bound to this world because of unfinished business (in this case, the business will never be settled as he promised to protect the thing no matter what... I believe "death" falls under that. :P ). When the PCs steal the crystal, I figured this meant that he would have to hunt them down, as per his oath to his liege to protect the crystal (can't do much protecting when it's on the other side of the world being used for a ritual).

Anyways, I guess I'll follow what On_the_wings_of_TPK said and not customize something (like making a B-Beg impossibly hard for 14th level) if it makes things unfun for the PCs (or if I think it will make things unfun).

Thank you all for the replies... If anybody else has something to add to this, I'd greatly appreciate your input.

Sure, why not. Give him TWF and Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Fullplate Armour. Assign the fullplate weapon stats (say, 1d10 Bludgeoning Heavy weapon), and swing away.

Be prepared for your players to like the trick so much that one of them wants to use the armour as a weapon, though.

In general you should allow the players to conceivably do whatever you let a BBEG do as far as rules bending. I am sure there are special exceptions (the enemy is a diety or something) but this will generally help prevent PC's getting angry with you.

These two people in particular. I would mention a couple others, but my sarcasm detector is broken so I think there is a possibility they are at least being semi-serious...

Thanqol: Insanity? No, it's "creativity mixed with ridiculousness, just add fun". Honestly, just because something seems stupid DOESN'T make it unfunnified.

Epifreak: Whoopdee-freaking-doo. I never realized D&D was supposed to be realistic. It's meant to be FUN, and my definition of fun is to be a little silly sometimes (or very silly often). If you aren't even allowed to have fun, then you shouldn't be doing whatever it is (so long as it's optional). *Walks away shaking head*

P.S. If an admin sees this, please lock this thread. I honestly don't feel like hearing blather and blabber from people about 'stupidity' or 'insanity'.

I'm almost positive that the weight and awkward shape of full plate armor (and what are we talking about - the breastplate?) would require it to be used two-handed. Is this a Large opponent?

Seriously, though. For my part, I think the answer is always "If your players can stomach it, anything goes." Personally, I would not enjoy this kind of thing. Would your PCs?

I honestly don't feel like hearing blather and blabber from people about 'stupidity' or 'insanity'.

Probably best not to include "stupidity" in the title of the thread. It makes it sound like you're open to criticism.

An Otyugh grabbed the dwarf fighter, made the appropriate grapple checks, then proceeded to beat other people up using the dwarf as an improvised bludgeon.

and when they were in a demon/devil infested mountain range there were a couple imps watches some others imps wrestle inside a glass box(IE, TV!)

and i threw a meat golem at them.

all the same players and they got a kcik out of all 3 :D

but it depends on how serious you want your campeign to be.
I and my players enjoy some humor like the above 3 example.

For the stats on full plate heres how i would go with it:

Id consider it a bludgeon weapon thats two size categories larger then you, damage 1d10 (maybe only 1d8, how big does a slab of metal/rock have to be to do 1d10?), 2x crit on a 20. - 4 to attack rolls as it is 2 size categories larger then your weapons. That is IF you are proficient in it. I would probably consider it an exotic weapon, and without having exotic weapon proficiency, you'd take that penalty for using it as well (so theres another -2), then dual wielding the things, well...Lets just say, your warrior won't have a very pretty attack bonus.

I know theres rules in the complete warrior for picking up random things and using them as weapons, in fact, drunken master class is based on it, you could use those if you want, it'd still be 2 size categories or so larger then you though, and I think the penalties for using those things are even meaner than what I'm suggesting here.

Thanqol: Insanity? No, it's "creativity mixed with ridiculousness, just add fun". Honestly, just because something seems stupid DOESN'T make it unfunnified.

Take a greatsword. It weighs 15 pounds.

Take a suit of full plate. It weighs 50 pounds, and is roughly the size of a person if it somehow stays together. (Remember, full plate includes grieves, helmet, ect)

You want to hold something that's both larger than a greatsword and more than twice as heavy in each hand? That's 100 pounds towards your encumberance, and Pelor save you if you're carrying anything else.

So you want to hit them with a big, hollow person-sized and shaped shell? When you're holding one in either hand, without your arms snapping like twigs? Try lifting up a person, for example, or something person-sized and weighted. Now try lifting on in each hand. I can guarantee you that the last thing you will feel like doing under this weight is using these people as weapons.

If you're running a muck around campaign, there's no problem, but this is certainly not 'cleverness'. Creative maybe, but with a DC -5 wisdom check, you'll realize it's not a smart idea.

I think he was in the "too ridiculous" camp. What exactly were you looking for in terms of responces in this thread?

I was HOPING for people to not focus on the Fullplate. It was an example. The thread was about cleverness gone dumb in general. And yes, I guess he would go with the "too ridiculous" camp, but there are other ways to reply to a thread. Such as, not being a bit of a jerk while you're at it. How was he a jerk? By assuming I was a babbling idiot (though I do not doubt many of you think that I am, regardless of what I say) who thought this would be the best tactic ever... it can never be a good tactic, it can be a silly one but not a good one.

Getting angry at and insulting people who are correct is ignorant. epifreak was 100% correct, the unwieldeness and weight of the armor has to be taken into account, since you are playing by the rules anyway. (ie, he is proficient with fullplate)

I was getting angry because people were treating me like I was an ignoramus. It's impossible? No kidding! Who woulda thunk it? I mean, I tried lifting up two chairs at the same time to figure out how it would work, but it was too impossible, so I figured I'd assume it was possible and work with it anyways.

Anyways, for those who might've missed it in this post... THIS THREAD IS NOT FREAKING ABOUT THE FULLPLATE. It would be greatly appreciated if that topic was avoided now, as people are continuously posting things that suggest I have no clue it wouldn't work... which, if you've ever been treated like a moron in real life, is VERY annoying and... angri... fying. Enraging.

The problem was that the example you chose was not cleverness gone dumb, it was just dumb.

Clever: strapping a dagger to your forearm, sticking out past your fist, so you have an instant weapon to use if disarmed.

Clever gone dumb: strapping a greatsword to your forearm instead of a dagger.

See what I mean? Using armor as a weapon can never become dumb cos it starts out that way.

Wow... guess the OP didnt like our responses.

Look dude if you really wanted us to take this seriously, y ou should have thought your post out a bit more. I mean at what point would it ever seem clever or even remotely interesting to have an armor weilding bad guy as his normal modus operandi?

Now if say he were cornered and saw a suit of armor just hanging there on display, and then picked it up and chucked it at the ensuing opponents then its clear how it would be handled. BUT COME ON... with all the inane suggestions here and else where on these forums its completely ludicrous to expect anyone here to take a Full Plate weilding BBEG seriously.

Futhermore... you posted here looking for responses, good, bad, and ugly alike. No one came right out and said, jebus your stupid... but we did poke fun at the idea, which you had to expect. So please stop getting your panties in a wad or you may find others simply ignoring you in the future.

And I don't think I said he was supposed to be taken seriously, I believe I said he was supposed to be a silly, ridiculous encounter.

And by the way, I did not post here for ugly responses. I came here looking for opinions on the subject (and before you say anything about lots of previous posts, there were several of them that were ugly responses, not ones simply disagreeing with me).

Well, I don't know about anyone else but I think it's giggles galore. You never expect to run into anyone using gopherchucks either, but it's because its unexpected and downright impossible that it's funny. I'm not going to assume you are using him as the master bad guy, but seriously, can you imagine how funny the training session would be.

*Young man walks in, approaches grand weapon master of fighting academy with a measured and respectful step*

*Weapons master watches young man approach*

*Young man stops a respectful distance and takes a deep breath* Master, I wish to train.

*Master appraises young man for a moment, as if weighing if the young man is ready* Have you picked a weapon to study?

*Young man nods* I wish to study...full plate. *cymbols sound!*

*Master's eyes widen* Only the most dedicated students can master the use of full plate as a weapon! *More cymbols!*

*young man nods* And I will be a most dedicated student.

*Master's eyes narrow* You will have to start with leather and cord and work your way up through studded leather, then the dreaded chainmail, and once you have mastered that, you will be free to try scalemail, banded and only after you can strike a man dead with scalemail will you be allowed to touch your first half plate! Are you sure you wish to do this?

*Young man eyes glitter* I will be the best student you've ever had, you'll see. *Slowly spreading young BBEG smile takes over his face*

In short, I don't know when cleverness turns to stupidity, I think it depends who you are talking to. :D I think that duel weilding full plate is particularly funny if the knights are still in it. I know it would take a belt of giant strength, monkey grip and whatever else magic and mechanics can provide, and still probably have a couple of negatives, but I think the shock value might be enough to give it a shot.

I've been known to use a knight or two as a weapon...with a well placed spot of grease and Bigby's tripping hand...I just can't resist using the guys with spikes on their armor to bowl for their buddies... but your guy isn't a mage, so he's got to use fighters methods. Keep in mind that someone in full plate is going to have negatives to their dex...and that the armor check pen doesn't help them in a grapple- a touch attack is usually pretty easy to make against armored folks. (boys, girls, 'guys' or 'folks'?) Use this touch to pick them up, grip them by the ankles and swing!

These are just ideas, don't mind me, I'm just throwing them out there. Anyone who wants to think I'm stupid may do so. :D

damn, there are some rude people here.

personally i liked the fullplate example. i don't know a person with 18 str except maybe those bodybuilders who weightlife in competitions who actually use 50lbs weights in each hand. seriously, this thread is about funny stuff that no one should rightly think of, and (i can't avoid this cause i'm pretty peeved about it) that makes all you numb-nuts who took the op seriously quite ignorant (sp?).

anyway, back to the gnome-chuks (pure gold)

i had a dwarven barbarian in one of my campaigns use dead people as weapons, and i made him do nearly impossible str checks to swing them (even with a couple penalties, but not too many cause it was more fun that way). he just kept rolling 14-20 with 22 str at level 5 (with rage). he killed 10 people doing that before being brought down.

personally i like the roleplay ridicularity better, like when a pc who's barely able to walk because of intoxication has to roll, or wind up in someone else's room. or better yet, a bathroom, thinking it's his room.

also, for d20 modern, i like labtops of smiting

damn, there are some rude people here.

You got that right.

I have a new hobby on the forums, one that constantly amazes me.

Pick and random thread that has 50+ posts (the more the better) which you have not yet read. Read the very first post - just the one - and then skip immediatley to the last post to see how it has degenerated into rudeness, arguing, insults, and name-calling.

Sadly, it never fails.

Also known as the "Inverse Law of Politeness to Posts."

If you read a given board daily and encounter a 50+ thread you've not seen before, it is so merely because somebody was impolite.

Seriously? Why else would so many people be posting so much?
