10-26-04, 02:20 AM on the off-chance that Skip Williams might read this, i'm hoping for a little clarification. my last gaming session we encountered a cadaver collector. my dwarven fighter has both the combat reflexes and close quarters fighting feats. during one round the cadaver collector tried to grab my dwarf with his full round attack(2).

an argument ensued as i believed that i would get attacks of opportunities on both of the CC's attempts to grab my dwarf as they are two separate attempts. my dm believes that i only get one attack of opportunity a round on a character for each specific type of action. ie one for the attempt at the grapple and then one for moving away.

since the phb says that "a character with combat reflexes can make multiple attacks of opportunity for each given opportunity" i believe that each separate attack is a different given opportunity.

an analogy i would use is a character using a bow in a threatened square. if he performed a full attack wouldn't he provoke multiple attacks of opportunity? if anyone has any insight on this it would be great. especially if that somebody was Skip Williams :D

Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat you can add your Dexterity modifier to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity)

Each grapple attempt provokes an attack of opportunity. AoO aren't based on the type of action, they're based on the action itself. You're correct.

If your DM still has doubts, ask him this: If you were surrounded and made punches at three different opponents, would each one get an AoO, or just the first one?

Anyway, A combatant can never make more than one attack of opportunity against a single foe. He can, however, make one attack against each foe, if they do provoke attacks of opportunity, up to his dex-modifier.

10-26-04, 08:38 AM Esswer, Combat Reflexes does indeed let you make more than one AoO against the same opponent. :teach: Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat you can add your Dexterity modifier to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn’t count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.

Greyman beat me to it. Reading the feat you're talking about helps if you're going to debate the logistics.

The answer, as I thought would be obvious, would be that each opponent gets an AoO. AoO's are granted for each action you take that provokes them.
