I looked a little but couldn't really find anything... basically I need something that will cause "detect evil" to turn up a negative despite the fact that the chracter is really a half-fiend in disguise, and has a +1 unholy longsword. Is there anything like that?

Is there anything like that? There are two spells that may be useful. Firstly, there is a spell in the PHB called "Nystul's Magical Aura". That hides magical auras, so I think it can be used to hide the "unholy" part of a longsword. The other spell is "undetectable alignment". Per the rules in the DMG you can make an item that grants that ability. There is also an "amulet of non-detection". It makes anyone who tries to cast a detect spell on the character with the amulet attempt a will save. If they fail, nothing "detects". If they succeed, they can detect as normal.
