Avasculate and a Liche.... This one is difficult. [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-20-06, 09:52 AM During a nice long session of DnD the other day my players had finally reached the last guy. The liche with the nasty spells and wicked abilities. Now in the final battle something happened that stopped everything right there. The party wizard casted Avasculte on the liche. I immediately said no as a DM. The Liche does not have to make Fortitude saves and also I thought of the spell as negative energy as it drains the targets life to half. Now my players argued long and hard and in their defense I forgot that I had cast Duelward (the liche had avasculate) and spell turning. Yeah, I'm a great DM. :tantrum: But anyways, we all make mistakes. I just have to know if Avasculate would actually harm a liche or undead monster? Please somebody clear this up for me. :confused:

Avasculate, however, does not work on objects, therefor you are correct in that the lich does not need to save against it.

Silly Sorcerer. He should have used Disintegrate It's not a Death effect, so a lich's immunity from Death attacks dosen't save him, it requires a fortitude save and works on objects, so yes the Lich has to save against it. In short, Disintegrate is the anti-lich. And the anti-Mummy, and the Anti-X, where X is a corporeal undead who does not have extraordinary immunities (such as Spell Turning - ouch - up.)

i had a similar arguement with a DM... i cast destruction on a vampiric dragon. ( undead sub-type ) ...

Destruction says " subject" " destroyes remains" if this spell would work on an UNDEAD any spell would!!!!!

WRONG ...

undead do not have to make fort saves...no matter what the spell says :P i guess unless it specificly says "affects undead"

end of story :( ..

Undead don't have to make Fortitude saves unless the spell works on inanimate objects, too. Like, say, disintegrate. Reading over the Destruction spell's descriptor, not only is it a [Death] effect, which the undead is immune to anyway, it's also a fortitude save, which does not work on objects.

Thems the breaks.
