I was wondering what you guys thought about playing an awakened Animal. The campaign I'm playing in is lvl 5 and i was gonna go for an Awakened Squirrel Druid 1/Ninja 4. I do 1 damage with my daggers, but i have precise strike so its not so bad, plus i can ride on the back of my animal companion (an eagle). My question is, what do you guys think of Awakened PCs? My DM says my character is fine, so thats not an issue, but i was wondering if my character will be particularly under- or overpowered. I have 3 strength, but 24 Dexterity, so my character is one of extremes. not sure if this warrants level adjustment, but i wondered if there are any situations or abilities that will make my character unequal for a normal one of his level. Any help would be greatly appreciated by my DM and myself.

AHAHAH! I love you man! A squirrel riding an eagle!!! This I GOT TO implement in my campaign!

I think that squirrel would be nice as a ninja, but I am too lazy to start thinking of mechanics. But the concept is awesome.

Okay, Rocky, I'll bite...

If you're going for a Redwall Abby campaign, or even a Narnia-ish one, I would be okay with this character. But for a typical campaign setting, it's just too strange for me. I would balk if I were your DM.

But I'm not your DM, and the guy who is says it's cool, so there ya go.

About your power level; I have no clue how that will play out. Obviously you will have strengths and weaknesses just like any other character. I'd imagine your size will determine a large portion of the advantages and disadvantages for this PC.

Question: why an awakened squirrel? What's the angle here?

I suppose awakened PC's are better than sleeping players.

Perhaps you shold stick with squirrel druid, then you can eventually get a moose companion.

i thought about the Narnia thing but i decided that i didnt like the sort of feeling of those animals, plus the rest of the characters are normal PCs. My character is actually NE and going for Assasin, i picture him dropping on someone, sticking his tiny daggers into their neck then jumping back onto his eagle. The druid who awakened him originally wanted him to be a fellow druid, but when he was killed my squirrel just sort of dedicated himself to killing anyone who he thinks took part in the old druids death. Now he thinks thats done hes adventuring to find a way of increasing his lifespan, as he knows he doesnt have many years left as a squirrel. Just the image of him jumping off some guy bleeding to death onto the back of an eagle was too cool, i originally planned on him being a tiny Knight/Fighter/Paladin type but i realised that i wouldn't be able to do any damage unless i was a spellcaster or sneak attacker, so decided to go with Ninja.

I seem to have a bit problems with finding squirrel's stats. Are they in monsters manual?

And, assuming they are tiny, will they get +8 bonus to hide? :O

Just concider taking wow of poverty, as you really can't buy that much magic items after all... "So... I would like to buy cloack of elvenkind and boots of elvenkind for a squirrel" "A wha" "A squirrel." "I see... I am afraid we don't have any in stock"

EDIT: Am I the only one seeing this as BBEG? Party finds out that the guy that has all the time done vile stuff to destroy them is a squirrel! Or when in every camp they destroy they never find the leader, there is always only a bunch of killed minions... and a squirrel.

I truely like the idea of awakend animals as PCs and was a bit disappointed that neither MM nor Savage Species provide level adjustments for them. I don't think a squirel should get a level adjustment.

A you want some sort of powergaming, take a vow of poverty - as you can't use most equipment one way or the other - but I'am quite sure, you're no powergamer anyway, as squirrels are not typically munchkins.

By the way, were you awakend by another PC? Does your character remember his life before he was awakend.

Me and my group dont have the BoED, so i dont have the stats for VoP. My total hide bonus is +23, so im kinda stealthy, and i have quite good AC. I dont think id remember much before i was awakened, and my main connection to the party is that one of the members was also taught by the druid who awakened me

In the right campaign, I'd be... ok with it. I wouldn't love it but if you did I'd find a way to make it work. I'm a little wary of the ninja class - I have a hard time imagining a clan/monastery/secret organization taking in a talking squirrel and teaching him the shadow arts. I'd be a lot more comfortable with a straight druid or ranger. But ninja? No.

As far as challenges/balance issues, the main red flag I see is the challenge of playing a Tiny creature. From d20srd.org:

Tiny, Diminutive, and Fine Creatures
Very small creatures take up less than 1 square of space. This means that more than one such creature can fit into a single square. A Tiny creature typically occupies a space only 2½ feet across, so four can fit into a single square. Twenty-five Diminutive creatures or 100 Fine creatures can fit into a single square. Creatures that take up less than 1 square of space typically have a natural reach of 0 feet, meaning they can’t reach into adjacent squares. They must enter an opponent’s square to attack in melee. This provokes an attack of opportunity from the opponent. You can attack into your own square if you need to, so you can attack such creatures normally. Since they have no natural reach, they do not threaten the squares around them. You can move past them without provoking attacks of opportunity. They also can’t flank an enemy.

I think the stat adjustments, the benefits and penalties from size, etc. all balance out. I think it can be a challenging character but don't think it would be over- or underpowered.

I've though about having to enter squares, but my plan is to either tumble or jump off the back of my eagle, or even wait for them to provoke an attack of oppertunity from me (+23 to hide, waiting in a corridor im like a little land mine)

I have to ask, how does the squirrel's backstory go? How did it become awakened? And if the rest of the party consists of humanoids, what convinced them to let a squirrel join? :P

I heartily approve of the character by the way, just curious too.

Well, they provoke attack of opportunity only if they walk over you (as you have rach 0) and in that case you have nothing to hide behind so you can't use the hide. I recommend taking a level of shadowdancer and hide in plain sight at some point. Also, I guess you could just run to square next to enemy and take a 5footer to avoid AoOs...

I'd say the two racial HD the awaken spell adds to most animals evens them out powerwise, oh, and the fact lots of them lack thumbs.

Wow, and it's not even an awakened, fiendish, feral, half-dragon, dire, OMGPWN!!!!1! squirrel from the 666th layer of the Abyss, either.

Nice to see people still like making interesting characters, not just powerful builds.

Honestly, I don't mean to be rude, but did you seriously think about this before you posted it? The same to everyone else you mentioned VoP. The OP said he was playing an awakened, vengence driven adventurer who is going assasin. Does anything about that scream EXALTED to you?! I don't think that violated the CoC nor was too offensive...

How about stacking VoN or VoPeace with Assasin too? I know a lot of Assasins would get great benifit from the Diplomacy boasts, but COME ON PEOPLE!

This is the DM board, so I will answer as a DM, not as a player.

It's an interesting character that could make for some interesting RP. It's most definitely not powergaming - with a max of 1 damage under most circumstances even the assassin death attack isn't going to be all that effective, and it's only useable once in any fight anyway, so for the rest of the combat you'll be desperately trying to flank to get some sneak attack damage and hoping that nobody punts you across the room (eagles don't get to fly well inside).

I don't recommend VoP. The BoED (and BoVD) are intended for mature players, meaning not only old enough but also able to take advantages and disadvantages in an adult, mature fashion. To have the VoP you'd have to be exhaulted - i.e. so good it makes paladins look shifty. No straying from the path. It's a roleplay limitation to balance out the bonuses and helps discourage munchkinism. In this case, you couldn't take any levels in assassin (evil only), which negates your concept of the evil killer squirrel character.

I'd say go with it, have fun, but resign yourself to playing either a almost pure sneak or changing the character once it becomes no longer effective. You won't be getting much magic (maybe a ring as a necklace, or a couple of other speciality items) because not that much is made for such small creatures, and you'll never be hitting hard.

I was the first one that mentioned it and no, obiovsly I wasn't thinking. Happy? :)

But well... now that I think about it, as a DM I might let take a feat to get similar bonuses for similar restrictions to balance the fact that he can't wear (or carry!) practically any equipment.

Two holes come to mind - who's going to train a squirrel to be a Ninja, and what sort of party is going to accept a talking squirrel as a member?

I remember a game in which the DM let me play a squirrel who was awakened by an epic druid that had intensified (maxed + doubled) it. I started out with a 36 int. Guess what class I played? :D

Didn't their used to be a "black squirrel" monster in 2nd Ed.? Something like a "dire" squirrel that was almost the size of a halfling....

Maybe your DM will let you play something along those lines, so you'd at least be Small size and have some chance at decent combat damage.

I'd think a good LA 0 awakened (Small-sized) squirrel should get -2 STR, +2 DEX and a climb speed.

You definately need an awakened moose conjurer as a companion. "Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!" :)

This is plain silly. I'll mention (as already has been mentioned) how in the world a squirrel was trained as a ninja?

This is one of those situations where the ability to take a situation such as this seriously goes right out the window.

Actually, one of the characters in my last campaign got reincarnated as a celestial monkey. He was the wizard, so it wasn't a big problem for damage dealing, although he had to have someone else carry around his old spellbook for him.

Perhaps the same way a an awakened rat does....perhaps he can search out some awakened turtles :D

Seriously though, I love the idea. As for training, he could easily sit in on classes and no one would really notice. Just wouldn't get much one on one attention. Probably be able to scrimp enough observation time to get 1st level...then can advance on own

How are you going to wield a dagger without opposable thumbs? You might be better off sticking to 1-damage claw attacks.

That said, I find awakened animals to have a lot of potential as interesting roleplay challenges. I've considered trying to do an awakened monkey bard who plays cymbals.
