I have heard people say that these do not work very well, but could someone explain to me why? I was thinking on running an OA style Aztec setting of my own.

And yes, those who no me to well, I am running a Rokugan campaign, about to start an FR one, playing in another FR one, and about to design this one.

Actually, there was an exceedingly good psuedo-anime/cartoon from th 80's that you should look into. It was called The Mysterious Cities of Gold, and was a French/Japanese collaberation about a Spanish boy named Esteban who goes to the new world, meets up with the daughter of a Mayan priest named Zia, eventually meet a native boy Tao, and all their adventures looking for the legendary cities of gold. Gave us some classic magic items like the sun amulets, the golden condor, and the sailing ship Solaris.

Unfortunatly, it had a gripping premise, great character development, and a compelling storyline, so it didn't see a lot of airtime in America. I hear it still comes on the international channel in Europe, but if you're in the states, you're SoL. Hope I don't get in trouble for this, but check on places like Kazaa and other file sharing networks and see if you can find the episodes. There's 39, and really have to be watched in order, but it will give you loads and loads of ideas for your campaign, not to mention its a great show in it's own right.

(1) Buff up on your jungle encounters and creatures. There are a lot of good ones out there, and some that translate as well.

Green Dragons (think cult of Quexecottle). Lizard men, Yuan-ti, other reptilians.

Apes and apelike creatures and foes.

Be sure to check up on rainforest animals.

(2) Cultures and Races. The Catfolk race from the Minis Handbook would fit well.

A Jungle Elf (cosmetic difference), halfling and goblin pigmies, Dwarves building mountian towns (Monchupechu), Humans building huge pyramids for sacrifice, etc.

Appropriate gods to worship (reptile, sun, jungle, river).

Equipment like blowguns.

(3) Ignore the fact that the Aztecs/Mayans were wiped out while still in the Bronze Age. Just assume that they survived until the iron age, and replaced their Bronze with Iron.

(4) Will there be a "Spanish" influence. If so, it fits well if either (A) the invaders are Orcs or (B) if the Aztecs are Orcs and the invaders are your humans.

Maztica, a 2nd editon aztec-themed campaign setting, worked very well. I think you can actually download it off the WOTC archives. It shouldn't be too hard to convert to 3E.

Here's the direct link to the Maztica City of Gold pdf. If you can wait for the download to complete, then it shouldn't be too hard to convert. There's a lot of information on there. Best of luck with the campaign.
