I'm having a hell of a time finding players for my new game and the trouble is the available ones are (for want of a better word) tainted.
See we had this DM i played with as well, and his world was evil, he has left some bad habits behind for the players to pick up (it didnt effect me at all).

Such habits include burnign down forests and villages just cause they can, raping children, tieing the intestines of a captured prisoner to a horse and gallpopign away, laughing at his screams, getting certain princeses pregnant then using a coat hanger to unpregerize her. THE LIST GOES ON.

In my game im planning i want them to be good guys...do things just cause they are good, and even when they have a LN alignment they do such things....
How can i get them to change their ways?

I mean basically free for alls where they would loot every body they could, kill 14 guards then burn the village down

Made me sick....any ideas

I'd personally never play in a game where that kind of crap was standard.

I know from experience that finding players can be hard, but i'd rather go without a DnD game than deal with that kind of stuff. If you think that these people will change, you might want to give it a shot, telling them that this is a Good campaign up front; they might like the idea and play their character appropriately.

Honestly though, i'd just try to find some new players. Your local gaming store is probably a good place to start. If you don't have one, then I don't know what else to tell you.

Tell your players to grow up or stop playing.

I agree with you find some new players.....but it isnt easy...the bad DM sorta owns the local store...so any isgn i put up he either
a) takes down and makes fun of or
b)leaves up and makes fun of it....so i guess ill have to try....any other ideas?

Put a sign up, let him laugh at it, and remain happy in the fact that he runs a game designed for sickos, pervs, rapist wannabees, and other people who would, in some other society be in maximum security prisons. No players is better than sick, twisted, players.

Sick, twisted, freaks.

Wow. I'd inform that guy that not only is he acting like a child with a game like that, he's a bad buisnessman scaring off people who will support his store.

Then I'd find another store to game at or take my adventuring online.

Check the classified boards here to see if you can scare up any games.

Definatly check the boards for a game or players in your area.

Would not hurt to put your location in your header, I know I contact posters in my area. You might get a response.

Definatly stay away from that other yahoo, I am always afraid I will meet somebody that twisted who really does blur the line between D&D and RW.

My suggestion? Dump these people. If you can't find any others to play with in your area, try playing online, via AIM or Fantasy Grounds, or something of that sort. There are always people looking for games on the Player Classifieds boards.

Id be wary of posting something like that at a high school or lower.

College level might be more appropriate, but playing D&D might not want to be something you advertise to the local school body.

I'm sensing a lotta hate for people whose characters do wicked stuff in-game. I don't think that's entirely fair. It's possible to be a fair, decent person who plays a messed-up character. If you saw me on the street you'd take me for the typical straight-laced Christian conservative, but last session my wizard casted Sleep on people who were swimming for their lives to shore. Gaming is a chance to be something other than yourself. It's escapism. Some people go one way with that, some the other.

As for the topic itself, you should probably try to find people as per other suggestions whose view of gaming more closely suits your own. On the other hand, you can try Pavlovian conditioning. Remember: the more evil things you do, the more frequently paladins try to make their bones by "bringing you to justice" (i.e. putting you on ice). There's really no way for them to respond when you say, "the paladins assaulted you because you smacked that knocked-up princess in the belly with a baseball bat. C'mon. You think junior-grade paladins aren't going to respond to that sorta thing? Think about it."

getting certain princeses pregnant then using a coat hanger to unpregerize her.

There's also a difference between being mean and being sick.

I dont have to worry about that, the advantages of being 6'3" and about 190 lbs is , even if your a nice guy, people dont pick fights to often.

CapnSwashbuckler They ruin the game man.....i dont mind a little evil such as killing goblins as measily as possible but im talking raping dead bodies.....burning people alive.....pouring lead into there eyes just cause they are stronger.....they are doing really sick stuff.....i am so glad i got outta there

Playing evil characters is fine. Playing sick characters is a little over the edge.

seen all of that. i played in an evil campaign and i can confidentally say that me adn the other PCs made the stuff in Book of Vile Darkness look like childs play. well that's exagerating. i dont think thta they are sick. they are probably just immature and they dont view it as you would in real life. mutulating someone's dead body is pretty messed up, but chacnes are they don't see it like that, they probably see it more along the lines of rediculous comedy. did anyone see that show on comedy central recently called Stella. in real life when they tried to perform open heart surgery that would be murder and people who think they are depraved lunatics. but on the show it was hilaireous and rediculous. that is probably how your PCs are viewing it. not as evil, but as hilaireous. if you want to change them then tell them you are starting a good campaign. everyone must be good. so your character must either be CG, NG, or LG. also tell them that you want a good character background. one page double spaced is plenty, but if you want more that is fine.

then tell them right away that any evil crap they pull will have experience penalties. give them warnings though and reward them for good roleplaying. dont throw them into combat right away it sounds like they probably just get hyper. take an hour or so of just roleplaying and talking so that they want to go to the orc stronghold to kill the leader so that hopefully the coming attack on the small town of Thorus is stopped. not so that they can have a fun time slaying orcs and get some XP. if you can get your players truly involved in the story they'll take it more seriously and won't do something stupid because they hopefully will think my character wouldn't do that. when the orc leader begs for his life and says please let me go and the paladin doesn't kill him, that can be good roleplaying.

my current gaming group had the same problem when one of us DMed a couple sessions in an evil campaign. since then they have taken the game more seriously and stopped their evil stuff. except for one guy that doesnt really play anymore. he always starts his characters at LN or NG and tries to work them to be evil eventually.

I'd move on and find some different folks to play with. Any criminal profiler will tell you the fantasy comes before trying it on animals, which leads to carrying out that fantasy IRL. That's not the kind of company you want to keep, and if the shopkeep is instigating this don't be surprised when you see his picture on the six o' clock news. Any sane individual would find no pleasure in pouring lead into an innocent bystander's eyes just because they could.

Here's a good IG way of letting them have their evil chars whilst making them not do ****ed up stuff: a Solar/Gold Dragon/whatever comes down and, instead of killing them, forces them to work for him/her/it/whatever. Could even go around with them, and if they slip up he lays the smackdown. That way, they can still technically be evil, and RP resenting the guy they're being forced to serve, but still behave at least somewhat appropriately.

Explanation in game is a LG NPC who sees them as some misguided souls who just need a bit of tough love and guidance. That, and they seem good at killing things, may as well get them to kill the right things.

You can’t force your players to play something they do not like. I had a similar problem, with pcs doing all sorts of evil stuff just for the fun of it. How did I solved it? I made a serious evil campaign where the pcs had the chance to play the evil characters they always wanted to play but never had the chance. And guess what? They stopped doing stupid evil stuff and started doing smart evil stuff, with lots of rping and careful planning.

Remember d&d is supposed to be fun for everybody not just you and if the majority of a group is having fun playing evil then you have two choices:
1) roll with it
2) Find a new group
Ether case I don’t think their something wrong with your players. They just like deferent things… and I can name more than a few people that HATE goody-goody characters.

I read, use, and love the Book of Vile Darkness. Evil's okay in the right place, at the right time, and coming from the bad guy.

What these people are playing is sick and twisted. A player who would take delight in making his character do these things is no one I want to be anywhere near, let alone socialize with on a regular basis. Run, don't walk, away from this group. Get some of your own friends interested in playing. It's people like those who give D&D a bad name.

I am getting away from them, I am going to print up some posters and then stick em around, hoping someone will like it.

I'm thinking of placing it in the fantasy section of my local book shop, seeing as how i found out that way....anyway i find what they were doing as sick and twisted, i don't mind evil, but what they were doing was the next step up.

I DONT LIKE IT. thats my peice said and thanks for reassuring me im not the only one who found their behaviour sick.
