In a recent campaign, my three players found a bag of holding. They had to transport a large mithril boulder for over a hundred miles, so I let them have the bag. They brought the boulder to the wizard who wanted to buy it, and then the players left. Later on they found a ring that let the wearer use Mage Hand at will. They got on a boat and went across a small sea. Their ship was attacked by a sea serpent. Two of the players had an idea. They went into the ship's hold (the serpent was about a quarter mile off) and got food and supplies and loaded them into the bag. Then those two players got into the bag and floated up and away over the sea using the ring. The third player had chosen to remain behind (he played a paladin-like cleric).

Question: Should I have allowed them to do this?

*check magic item section in DMG (207)*
Even the smallest bag of holding (which cannot hold two people, much less two people and supplies) wieghs in at 15 lbs., which is 10 lbs more than mage hand can lift. The smallest bag that can hold two people weighs 25 lbs, which is 20 lbs more than mage hand can lift. Another problem is that their air will run out during the flight, and unless the have some way of refreshing it, they will suffocate and die.

I blame the misconception that most people have that a bag of holding is a belt pouch when really its a bug freaking burlap sack.

Most of my players still think that.

Uh, just don't close the bag all the way.

No, you shouldn't have allowed it. I'd knock the ring out of commission for a while.
