Okay, we all know what happens when a bag of holding is put in a portable hole, or vise versa; a rift/portal to the astral plane is created, destroying the bag and hole in the process. if it's portable hole in bag of holding, then everything in 10 ft is drawn into the portal.

But what if you are already on the astral plane? do you open a rift to the material plane? a random plane? a rift/portal where anything that goes through is automatically destroyed forever/erased from existence?
Have any of you run into this before, and if so how did/would you deal with it?

I'd go to the negative energy plane, just to **** with whoever tried that.

The idea seems to be that recursion can't happen. You can't put bags of holding in a portable hole or vice-versa because then you'd have, effectively, infinite storage.

The two enchantments are incompatible. So, I'd say just perform the regular mishaps for each occurence, but randomly select the plane each time, and of course destroy the items. In no way should this be a reliable mode of travel.

Reliable mode of travel? 'Twould be easier to just hire a mage to cast teleport.

Parties do funny things. I've seen weirder methods of attempting to get from plane to plane.

Once I had a Paladin that was determined on getting to the 9 Hells, his answer: Kill a child then take his own life.......it didnt work but when they raised him he was a Black Guard....

Perhaps the homebrewed Plane of Insanity would be a good destination for these insane players to go to from the Astral Plane. :plotting:

We used to houserule that it worked like breaking the staff of power, and you went to a random plane if you survived the blast. I actually kept a red dragon from completely destroying the party by threatening to drop the bag in the hole.

Using pre-existing Astral phenomena you could always rule that the resulting event would result in a Psychic storm. Click HERE (http://planewalking.dungeons.ru/transitive/astral/astral.htm) for more info on the Storms and their effects if you don't have the MotP handy (pg 51).

You could also just have it be common knowledge that trying it on the astral plane would destroy them completely, by which I mean even their souls would be killed. So no coming back no matter what spell is used.

I thought Bags of Holding and Portable Holes only worked on the Material Plane, anyway? Don't they cease to function is used elsewhere? The bag would act like a normal bag and the portable hole would just be a black circle on the ground. In this case, you can't really abuse anything. On the other hand, this also prevents players from using a bag of holding to smuggle things onto the Astral Plane by using a Bag of Holding. :)

Also, I was wondering...Would you survive going to the Astral plane if you put a portable hole in a bag of holding? That could be a fun plot hook...

Where did to get that idea?

Before the advent of 3.0 and 3.5, back when the game was called AD&D, it was in the rules that both the bag of holding and the portable hole operated by accessing the Astral Plane, which was the reason for the explosion stuffing them into each other. While on the Astral Plane, both storage devices became inaccessible. In those days, the Astral Plane did not connect to the inner planes, so if you went that way you could not open your portable hole or bag of holding either.

If I recall correctly, a bag of holding or portable hole on the material plane viewed from the astral plane was a solid cylinder with the volume of the hole. It seems like the bag of holding was a "wormhole" stretching through the astral plane to a pocket dimension.

Right, but we're talking about 3.5... some of us keep up with the new rules. I thought he may have read somewhere in the 3.5 fluff text that they worked this way.

Well, in any case they do NOT operate that way as far as I know, despite how they may have acted in 'teh olde dayz'.
