| Tafka Oddfan10-09-04, 11:58 PM | I want to give my players a couple of options when it comes to generating ability scores. Basically, any player can choose to either generate their ability scores using the floating reroll method or the point buy method. The problem is, how many points should I allow them to allocate to their ability scores in order to ensure this is a balanced option? I fear 25 points will be too little considering that players using the floating reroll method can reroll one of their dice while generating ability scores. How many points should I allow those players electing for the Point Buy method to allocate? Any suggestions? |

Roll 4d6 per attribute (like normal) but allow the Players to use a 2 for 1. This means that they can take two points from one attribute and apply one point to an attribute of choice. No limit on decreasing stats but other attributes cannot exceed 18, unless of course for racial bonuses. This is what I use. It lets the players min/max but gives them stats their comfortable with. 3. Roll (make sure you watch for this one) 18d6 at the same time. The players can group any three dice the way they want. But only one group per die. All attributes are at 0 so a PC could have a 3 in one ability possibly. I find #1 a bit easy to manipulate because a PC can just be a fighter. Putting and 18 in S,Dex and Con and a 10 in CH; leaving 8's in Wis and Int. "I am just a stupid fighter!!! AAAAArrrrgh..me smash..I think." Number 2 is my fav. The two for one can be used for power gains but usually, I find in my group anyway, that players use it for balance. Three is good but with bad rolls a PC can become VERY average. |
