Hey there,

Just a small problem with no doubt a simple solution but I just needed help making the decision.

I've got a campaign I want to play, I know the direction I want to take it etc. The problem is I have a lack of players (i.e. 2 as opposed to 4) who really really want to play it. Now I was thinking of letting them have two characters each but then realised that this could damage the roleplaying aspect of the game.

I was wondering whether you guys had any advice (apart from being patient and looking for more players) that could help me balance the game?

Just run your campaign with two players. I've ran campaigns with only one player and they worked out just fine. You just have to downscale some of your challenges, but the roleplaying part of the campaign will be even more intense.

If you don't know how to downscale your adventures, you should check out the guide to solo campaigns that KJW made. The Kandi & Pepper stories that Oakspar77777 wrote in his thread are also very helpful.

Hope you have a lot of fun,

Cheers

Ooo that sounds interesting. Do you happen to have the link for it?

Here you go. These are two very big threads (lots of replies and lots of views). You can easily find them by adjusting the thread viewing options at the bottom of your screen.

Oakspar's:

KJW's:

Hope this works. Never used links anyway :)

Alternatively the Gestalt house-rules are a good way to make 2 PCs as powerful as a single one.

Basically they can have 2 character classes and every time they level up, they gain all the special features of each, and the best bonus to saves/bab/hit points of the two.

Let them play two characters. Like, Batman and Robin or Wolverine and Jubilee. One takes a sidekick/support role. Shouldn't hurt role-playing at all. :)

Don't underestimate the ability of most players to play two characters at once. After all, as DM you are playing every NPC in the world and adjudicating the rules at the same time. If you can do that, can't a player handle two characters and keep them separate in his or her mind?

Yeah go for two characters, or four characters, 2 each.

Good luck.
