| Eightbitmage08-01-05, 10:56 PM | In my upcoming game it doesn't look like there is going to be a rogue, and because I plan on this being a non-dungeon oriented game, and I don't really like traps, I was thinking of taking away Trap sense and giving the barbarian in the party something else. I was thinking maybe Diehard at 6th level, and maybe throwing in Lighning relflexs at some point. Any suggestions? |

"Let's see, I can only take 2 other people, and sice they said that there weren't going to be any traps, I'll leave the Rogue behind when he can help us out a great deal." They Hide, they Gather Info, the Pick Locks, for christ sakes! Not all doors can be bashed through! Look, what I'm saying is this: a campain without a good number of traps, is, in my opinion, not worthy of being called a campain. You say they won't be in dungeons, but, hey, what about castles?..... You know what, I hate Barbarians, so.... Yeah, I shouldn't be the one your asking. Rogues all the way! |
| Cyra08-01-05, 11:08 PM | well....uh....I like the idea, if you feel it makes the player more useful, which obviously he would be. |
| Sildatorak08-02-05, 12:37 AM | Trap sense is a fairly minor ability for barbs so replacing it isn't really necessary; they are plenty powerful even if they never see a trap. |
| weasel fierce08-02-05, 01:16 AM | If it makes the game better for you, do it |
| cvazi08-02-05, 08:53 AM | I love playing barbarians. I have never actually used trapsense. The one time my barbarian actually hit a trap- I forgot about that ability until the end of the session. |
| celtredleg08-02-05, 10:34 AM | If it is a wilderness campaign, there is very little reason for random traps to be in the forest, or desert or what ever. Barbarians will work just fine as is, you never know, there might be ONE trap somewhere. As for having to have a rogue, why?? Sure they are useful, but so are many classes. You dont need a fighter, you just need an HP sponge. You dont need a cleric, you just need some form of healing. A ranger with CLW wand works just fine. Others can cover the lack of rogue. |

Rogues all the way! ok, i think you need to reread that original post and try again:P the post is about there not begin traps and replacing trap sense on a barb, not 'no traps so no one plays a rogue'. no rogue was simply an off-comment that he made which the original post would have been fine without:P anyway I agree with Sildatorak. trap sense is a minor ability on the barb and doesnt really need replacing. thats just my 2cp though. |

Barbarians will work just fine as is, you never know, there might be ONE trap somewhere. There's plenty of traps you could use in the wilderness--not randomly, but gnolls or something could easily trap animals for food or bandits could use traps to keep out intruders from their camp...not to mention kobold punji traps. |
| ajmastrean08-02-05, 11:01 AM | You could just increase the coverage of trapsense to include things that are not specifically "traps", but rather trap-like. --> Any sort of pit or other terrain that would require a Reflex save to avoid some consequence. --> uh... my brain isn't working, more people please add to this list! It may turn out not-feasible in this regard... but, I also agree with Sildatorak on this one. |
| Crunchy Frog08-02-05, 12:24 PM | Unearthed Arcana has rules for variant barbarians. Since UA is mostly open content, this is available online. Variant Barbarians (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#barbarianVar iantTotemBarbarian) For example, a Wolf Totem barbarian loses Trap Sense, Uncanny Dodge, and Improved Uncanny Dodge, and in their place gets Improved Trip and Track for free at levels 2 and 5. |
| Phrennzy08-02-05, 01:15 PM | Give the Barbarian 5gp extra starting money instead of changing the class ability. I guarantee, ifyou take it away, the Barbarian will die due to the ONE trap you put in the campaign. |

I guarantee, ifyou take it away, the Barbarian will die due to the ONE trap you put in the campaign. Hehehe. I love timber rogues. . . P1: Hey Grog (barbarian), go walk down that empty corridor. Grog: OK. <walks down corridor, springs poison needle trap, dies> P1: Well, we found one trap- who's next? TIMBER!!!! |
| Centauri08-02-05, 01:38 PM | Of course make whatever changes you feel necessary for a fun game, but my gut instinct is that the character should have to take the good with the bad, and the useless with the useful. If the player doesn't think the use he'll get out of some of his abilities will make up for the lack of use of other abilities or for the penalties inherent in the class, he should take another class or race. Sorry. Flexibility in his choice of Feats is all the Fighter has going for him, so letting a Barbarian trade out certain abilities to gain more useful feats sort of rankles me. |
| shadowfox62808-02-05, 01:38 PM | Change the Trap sense to some sort of FORT bonus in certain conditions? I don't know. |
