The bard looks pretty cool now in 3.5 not a useless class like it use to be.... just my opinion any way...

The question is I have a 5th lvl bard 1 lvl rogue(party did not have one.) What is the best EQ to buy... I have the 19000 that 5th lvl charaters get....

thanks

Mostly intregued by the Combination of a Bard and Rogue, considering that a Bard can do pretty much everything that a Rogue can except the special stuffs.

As for Equipment, I would definetly get something to write on/with, some rope and a collapsable grappling hook (Arms and Equipment guide). If you can convince the DM, take hold of the DMG and purchase a particular blade. The one I am thinking of is described as being a dull gray blade, but it gives bonuses to hit when backstabbing. Two sets of clothes, one flamboyant (if you wish) and one plain (for burgling). A crowbar would be good for those traps you can't open, and some thrown weapons that you can resupply easy so that you can trip traps that you cannot disarm. Otherwise, there is not much more I can think of as necessary, except maybe some soap.

Another magic item of use would be a robe of Eyes. Always a usefull thing, and very handy to a Bard/Rogue.

What are your dude's skills and Feats?

What books does your DM allow?

Also, you might be better off doing this on the 'Players' section of the Boards - as it is beyond the realm of a DM - unless this is a NPC?

actully that is a good point.. I am so use to runing a game .. I havent played a character for some time,,, I guess sugested feats for a bardic rogue who is almost always up front...not a main fighter but in the lead anyway....

As for what he will allow are the core books. I have the PHB and DMG and Song and Silence.

The reason for rogue is the use of trap finding.. only rogues have this ability..

Take Opportunist ASAP - this has served my group's Rogue very well

Also, lots - I mean LOTS of ranks in Tumble will help you get in and out without coming to harm

Hide is beyond useful if you are leaning towards something like ShadowDancer - or even just generally, as you can combine with many types of actions to remain hidden (or snipe).

I believe it is a Rogue Special Ability that you can choose at higher levels - if you are gonna do Rogue instead of Bard?

Hmm. A level 5 bard, eh? 19,000 gp worth of gear to work with . . . hrmh.

First of all, I'd go with a nice mithral chain shirt, if you can get one. Make it a +2 version. There's 5100gp or so. It's light armor, and should not give you problems with spell failure. So there's a good investment right there.

I guess you'll want a weapon, too. My pick would be a composite longbow of whatever Str bonus your character has, if he's got a Str bonus at all, and to go with that, I'd get the heck off of the front line.

If that's really not an option, then I'd go with the longsword, probably a +1 version (2,315 gp), and I'd also carry a +1 buckler (1,165 gp).

That gets you 7,580 gp. The remainder, if it were up to me, would go as a +1 ring of protection (2,000 gp), and a cloak of charisma +2 (4,000 gp). Along with this, I'd grab for an amulet of natural armor +1 (2,000 gp), Heward's handy haversack (a great item, with tons of utility) (2,000 gp) That brings you up to 17,580 gp.

Then I'd add a wand of cure light wounds (750 gp), and an assortment of potions/scrolls that might prove useful to you. After that, I'd be sure to have the following non-magical items (the list is extensive, thus necessitating the handy haversack):

a musical instrument (masterwork)
100 ft. of silk rope
a grappling hook
a bag of caltrops
at least 3 vials each of cooking oil, alchemist's fire, holy water, and acid
chalk (surprisingly useful if you're in a dungeon crawl)
a collapsible leather bucket
a flask of whiskey, brandy, or other spirituous liquor
a bullseye lantern
a pebble with continual flame cast on it (in the lantern)
a collapsible 10-foot pole (for poking things with)
a set of manacles (masterwork)
a hammer
a saw
a wood axe
10 florin spikes (big nails are very useful sometimes)
a hacksaw
a bag of flour
a bag of pepper
a small cookpot
a clove of garlic
a simple lock
a ten-foot length of chain
a change of clothes
a 10ft.x10ft. piece of canvas
a sharpened wooden stake
a crowbar
a jar of soot
a knife which is never, under any circumstances, to be used to kill things you don't plan to eat
a bar of soap
a whetstone
100ft. of fishing line
20 fishhooks
an empty jug
a bag of marbles or ball bearings
a 3ft. length of iron wire
a ball of string
a spool of thread
needles
a few swatches of plain cloth
three iron wedges

The everburning torch in my list is replaced by the bullseye lantern with the everburning pebble inside. You take the price of the everburning torch, tack on the value of the lantern, and have a much better light source.

As for the matter of magical instruments . . . at level 5, it's really not worth it. The strings of spell storing are very nifty at higher levels, and those are in Song and Silence. Otherwise, I suggest looking at Magic of Faerūn for magical instruments. It has a number of them. A few of them are really very cool, too.

If you are looking for instruments that are particularly worthwhile from a mechanical standpoint . . . Try a tambourine, a hand drum, a bull-roarer, or a string instrument -- they can all be played without blocking your mouth, which means you can use vocals along with them to employ TWO bardic music effects at once. This does mean that you have to double up on Perform sub-skills, but if you just want to be able to use Inspire Courage or something at the same time as you do something more involved, it's not a big deal to grab enough ranks to do just that.

heh i have done this a couple times in a campaign i was a player in with a priest, but seeing as i was a preist of tempus and chaotic neutral i also made a simular lantern with a pebble with deeper darkness on it so the when you unshuttered it you got a cone of darkness.. try that for freaking out the townsfolk..:)
