A somewhat quick question... about how much exp/reward should players get for completing a 'basic training' style course when joining a military company? I'm thinking basic weapons training, spell training for the casters, physical workouts (running, obstacle courses, etc.) and other such military training.

I'm also planning for the PCs to be about 2nd or 3rd level by the time they reach this portion of the quest. Would they even need the training?

I guess it depends on how challenging it is...

If there characters need to pull off a number of skill checks, battles, or other difficult situations, then a minor exp award might be nice.

But if they just gloss over that period and don't ask them to roll a die, then they really don't deserve exp in my opinion.

However, I really don't think 2nd-3rd level characters need basic training. I assume a 1st level warrior has gone through some amount of basic training, and a 3rd level fighter is much stronger than that. I would only see the need of basic training to get them accustomed to a military lifestyle and attitude, not to increase their ability.

So I say gloss over the training and don't give them exp for it.

That all depends on how difficult it is for the PC's to complete the training. For each exercise, you will need to determine the CR of the exercise. Then just use the XP table and award XP accordingly.

I'd say it depends on WHEN they join. As in, did they join this military group before the campaign began or after they were already 1st level?

Look at it this way: basic training takes a 0 level person (or a 1st level Commoner) and turns him into a 1st level fighter. Running a 1st level fighter through basic training isn't teaching him anything new, and a refresher course isn't worth an XP award.

With regard to other classes, there would be no XP award but this would make a great in-game reason to allow multiclassing to fighter on the next level gain.
