In the campaign I'm running, I want to have a few Goblin ships attack the town where the party lives. I've got everything I need except a way to keep track of how the battle is going. I've tried two different things to make maps of the battle, but those didn't go so well. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to do a battle at sea and keep track of everything.
I tried using the diagrams of the Caravel and Cog from Stormwrack, but that didn't work so well, and I also tried just using a basic outline of the ship, but my grid for that was all screwy.
So, any suggestions? Or should I skip the map, and just try to remember the distances between the ships? I'll be using the narrative combat since I don't have the Arms and Equipment Guide to get the vehicle combat system from that.

Why wouldn't a grid work for the ships?

Use a different grid for each ship so that everything stays square and you should be good. Unless the PCs are fighting in the water, just knowing the distance between the ships is good enough.

Since the ships are attacking a town, you may want to disregard the narrative combat system from stormwrack since that system is for 2 or more ships attacking each other.

Instead, it might be simpler to start the fight off the grid, then use the grid once the ships are close enough so that you can squeeze everything on the map. How long you spend off the map v.s. how long you use it will greatly depends on what kind of weapons both sides are using, and what kind of spell casters each side has.
