I have a BBEG in the planning stages (or more accurately, 3 BBEGs) and I'm not sure what their EL should be compared to the party's level. Any tips? (If it is relevant, they are an Elf Sorceror, a Dwarf Fighter, and a Halfling Ranger)

it depends on your party lvl but i think that the rule of thumbs is 2 lvls above the average party lvl if i'm not wrong

I believe that if you click 'Edit' on your first post and scroll up you can ... (never actually tried myself)

How soon are you planning to have them confront him? If it is the end of a game session encounter, or a short term adventure, then 2 levels higher is good. If he is the mastermind behind something that you want the party to spend a lot of time on, make him considerably higher: 10 or more levels. They would have to fight their way through or past many lower level minions, over the course of many adventures, to even find him. By the time they get there, they should be within 5 levels of him; the bigger the difference, the deadlier the fight. If they meet him before they are ready, they should know the meaning of the word "retreat"!
