First off some random babbling from me, I am writing this guide because a fair percentage of threads are "boo hoo my BBEG got squished like a bug" and this is a relativly simple problem so i'm post a couple of solutions to make them stay around for longer, this isn't a BBEG creation think you still gonna have describe and stat them yourself this is just gonna be some words of wisdom to live a little longer.

B.B.E.G (Big Bad Evil Guy aka. the end of section boss.)

He's the man with the plan, and you want the players fight with him to be awesome and something there gonna remember for years to come. First off you gonna need some spells. Spells come from class's there's two main candidates in PHB for villians.

1. Wizard. (Thats right the wizard did it)
Plus's to wizard villian: highly effective spells that can deal with a wide varity problems, buffs such blur and displacement, mage armour and blink, debuffs such ray of enfeeble(its low level but suprisingly effective even agaist high level adversaries), slow which will make the party less effective therefore he will live longer and finally if you got level you can dominate people to give more intresting minions to protect your self with. Cons puny D4 hit die (you need those hp's for long combats) slower minion aquistion though own spellcasting.

2. Cleric (Bad god worshiped by a Bad***)
Plus's to cleric villians. Solid in a fight with heavy armour and reasonable selection of weapons (simple weapons include spear for fighting over minions and morningstar for busting heads), non assocated level for almost every monster ever, meaning you can really load on levels with raising the CR much, Loads of minions with rebuke and command undead and easy low level access to animate dead and descreate even a 5th level cleric could have 25 1hd skeletons under his control at anyone time which is enough to at least buy him a couple arounds of buffing or spellcasting before he has engage anyone in melee. Also Clerics can heal themselves which is always funny. Con's not as upsetting a spell list as wizard.

Minions

Every BBEG needs some minions, wheather they're skeletons, zombies, thugs or deamons, expendable speed bumps that will slow down the players are a must for any B.B.E.G. First on the list skeletons. Skeletons are good bread and butter minions wheather its dead town guard, knights (with free armour) or monsters nothing says "i'm evil" like some undead goons. Level by level whats most effective changes but don't worry about genrally bigger is better. Minions are best used to grapple, trip and otherwise annoy the PC's and block charges while your B.B.E.G casts some choice last second buffs and use's some of his ranged spells.

Equipment

As your B.B.E.G is most likly gonna be targeted by every single one of your PC's most powerful abilties you gonna have to be ready for it, your first port of call is gonna by boost those saving throws and ac. I recommend a cloak of resistance of at least +3 for every BBEG as well as wisdom and constitution boosting item to boost its fort and will saves later, i recommend a Scarab of Protection as well to give it SR and futher protection from death effects. Next on the list is protecting your BBEG from physical attacks AC is straight foward so i'll skip that other than mentioning touch AC is important so to remember sure that up with at leat a deflection bonus after AC you need a miss chance it annoying and is potental life saver so at the very least either cast or have potions of blur or displacement.

Also remember to make you BBEG more memorable describe what he's doing with a bit of detail and enthuisasm, it surpising how much a little description every action goes.

Well thats it for now next time on "because I hate your players" cursed items and other things to upset your players.
