...or not as you choose. ;)

Anyhoo... Was just wondering what sort of critters other GMs would suggest throwing up against my kindasortabutnotreally epic party. I'm currently running through a boosted and modified web enhancement adventure, but I figure I can squeeze two maybe three more games out of that. I'm looking for encounters that leave the party battered but still able to keep going (average to slightly above average CRs, but god only knows what the technical "level" of my party is). 3 party members are half-dragons (with slight modification to make breath weapon actually useful), 3 are an anthro-dragon race I made (LA +5, basically an enhanced half-dragon with higher stat boosts and nat. armor, breath weapon at will, access to all modes of parent dragon's movement, and one special ability based on race, size class medium).

Party is as follows:

EL 20 monk/dervish - 12monk, 3dervish; fang anthro (special - +2 natural armor); think Tasmanian devil and you're not too far off, heading for more dervish for now
EL 20 rogue/assassin - 6rogue, 9assassin; sapphire anthro (special - spiderclimb); "reformed" assassin, direction currently in limbo (silly assassin got a conscience... :P)
EL 20 spirit shaman - 17 spirit shaman; half copper dragon human; probably heading for more spirit shaman
EL 20 bard/sublime chord - 10 dragon disciple, 10 bard/sublime (not sure of ratio, I think 7/3 or 6/4 bard/sublime); half song/oceanus human (gets oceanus breath weapon, elec. immunity, long story behind the hybrid); aiming for more Sublime
EL 20 fighter/dervish - 7fighter, 10 dervish; half emerald/song half-elf (mom was half song elf, dad was half emerald human, player gets emerald breath weapon and song elec. immunity); heading for a few bard levels and then War Chanter (also seems interested in Tempest)
EL 25 ranger/rogue - 6ranger, 4rogue, 10shardwing (homebrewed PrC, think LotR style ranger or else a ranger/rogue/assassin hybrid); shadow anthro (special - shadowmeld) (psuedo-NPC, walking talking plot-hook, and GM's character); probably heading for more ranger

I prefer encounters based on stuff in MM1-3, FF, the Complete series, Frostburn, Races of the Wild, Draconimicon, SS, M of Faerun, and official web enhancements for the simple reason of they're easily accessible and something I can wave by my willingvictim of a co-GM as needed to give his opinion on without printing. That being said, it's a preference. I'm a little more inclined to run with an "official" monster/group of monsters than I am something homebrewed, at least until I get my GMing feet more solidly under me (been RPGing for quite a while, this is the both the first D&D game I've DMed and the first RPG game I've been *the* GM for as opposed to secondarybehindthescenes style assistant GM).

OK, concept here... Take it or leave it, but your query just tipped off an awesome idea in my head...

By this level, these PCs are used to feeling like freakin' kings of the world, right? I mean, sure, they get roughed up by the occasional dragon or vampiric uber-beast, but all in all, the common folk (and many of the nobles as well) fear and revere them. But what if...

What if they found themselves in a bigger world? A world where goliaths and hill giants were mere bugs to the dominant races: storm giants, titans, and the like. A world where even commoners scoff at the folly of putting such excessive faith in such puny weapons. A world where young dragons are considered mere beasts of burden! Just trying to convice the local blacksmith (a "mere" 2nd level expert who also happens to be a titan, for example) to make you a sword in your size could be a major ordeal!

OK, so that's not real helpful in the sense of generating encounters, but it is certainly a concept worth exploring if you want to keep things interesting for this party.

Definately amusing concept, and I might run it by a friend who is immensely amused by running campaigns with a weirdness factor of waytoomuch, but unfortunately not appropriate for this game. (Not to mention that due to events 7000 years ago the average level of an NPC or PC is well above stereotypical D&D norm.)

Nopers! :P

(Not to mention they're only barely epic, and the idea of throwing dead baby gods and stuff at them is just kinda' gross... From what I remember seeing the last time I skimmed Epic, it seemed like every other monster was of the variety I have no real desire to see in game let alone have to GM...

actually, EL21 is epic

I dont recommend using any of the abominations trivially though, because of their very nature. It should be a cataclysm or some other fantastic even that should bring about an abomination, and even then, it should be featured as the BBEG. That is my opinion however, and youre perfectly free to toss Infernal after Infernal at the party :D
