Hey guys, I am in need of some advice.

I run a wizard campaign and one of my PC's is a 6th level Wizard with little to no personality at all. Default attack spells - yadda, yadda, yadda. He is a good player but really had not put forth the effort to make his PC unique.

So this past weekend he comes to me with some suggestions as to the direction he wants to take his character. He is very fond of conjuration magic and thinks that he will be happy pursuing the path of a summoner.

He also has been taking Knowledge: Magical Beasts. His reasoning being that he would like to travel to world and research magical beasts to eventually summon them. However, summoned critters are Outsiders and Magical Beasts are not unless it is a celestial/fiendish Manticore or something similar. He also mentioned something along the lines of creating a staff that would essentially trap beasts within a gem for him to summon later. Perhaps storing one monster at a time.

I am trying to figure out how to tie this all together and make the PC's requests a reality without unbalancing my campaign. I am eager to hear any and all suggestions in regards to this PC's situation.

So basically he wants to play a pokemon type character? Sorry, the parallels are spooky; "celestial dire weasel I choose yooooouuu!"

Knowledge of magical beasts is actually covered by Knowledge (arcana). You may want to mention that to the player :)

I don't see a major problem with letting him research magical beasts to summon. After all, the Summon Nature's Ally spells don't require the creatures to be Celestial or Fiendish :)

Another possibility is to come up with a feat called "Beast Initiate" or somesuch that allows him to add the Summon Nature's Ally spells to his spell list.

have him research the Summon natures allies spells and model a staff off of one of the ones in the staff section. Then you're done.

It could be considered a feat for the SNA line since it is a better spell than summon monster most of the time, I'd probably treat it kind of like the greensinger feat that adds spells + a knowledge and give him a +2 to knowledge nature or arcane in addition to the spells.

Thanx for the advice guys - I never saw the similarities to poke until you pointed them out....

Creepy indeed.
