I'll share our pair of Final Battles.

Round 1. The party enters the vampire's castle. He's in the entry room, fireballs them and runs up the stairs. This goes on for ages, until they finaly come into his main chamber. He then activates a poison gas trap which kills all the party save the druidess and paladin. He hurtles the paladin out the window, and makes her his consort.

Round 2. The new party, fresh from level 1 back up to level 30, storms the castle for payback. The vampire and the vampire druidess wife appear to fight them. We called the Druidess player to that session, and we (I being the DM, played the Vampire), did the whole aristocratic love thing (FREE HUGGLES!). We LARPed that battle. We stood in battle poses on the front lawn, someone rolled dice, called out who attacks and if it hit, and we attacked so. Eventualy I got killed, and she pretended to be really upset. The party shrugged, and left her there. Forgetting she could cast Reincarnation.

We killed them in their sleep.

Round 3 pending.

In an old campaign we players were getting bored and wanted a challenge. There was an army approching which we were meant to help a group of paladins deafeat in a battle, but we wanted a challenge, so we took them on ourselves. Our party:

10th lvl sor, 10th lvl rogue, 10th lvl cleric, 10th lvl bard, 9th lvl ranger/1st lvl wiz

The enemy army:

2000 commoners, 1000 warriors, about 200 generals, 250 cavalry ("the most feared horsemen in all the land") 5 lvl 12 wizards, one lvl 20 wizard and the king - lvl 20 fighter]

So to begin with we had been given a scroll of sepia snake sigil, a half empty wand of fire ball (5d6 i think) and normal supplies for our class's and levels. So we quest up to this army, about 2 weeks travel. One night we were resting and some horse-mounted scouts came and started questioning us. We tried the diplomatic approach, didn't work, so we had to kill them. Thata meant we had to move that night, or the base would be on alert if the scouts didn't return.

So we start by using magic to put out the torces of the sentries, who worked in pairs, so one would go to re-light it. We would kill the remaining one, then when the other returned him too. Used this tactic to take out all the sentries. Then me, the ranger, and the rogue used our stealth to coup de grace all the sleeping men. We literally got through about 400 men before we were found out. Then the 5 wizards charged us and used their "secret weapon" which was summoning a huge fire elemental.... just after our sorcorer had got ice storm. Needless to say, with my outrageous amounts of arrows, his magic and the support of the rest, we killed the wizards, but everyone was on to us. So we teleported out to re-group.

Now the sor and bard took my pet pegasus and made a few buckets of metal (new spell: water to metal) and flew above the camp, sending off fireballs. I made some fire arrows and started shooting down the tents and the other two stayed to protect me. Soon the 2oth lvl wizard was taking flight after the pegasus, as we expected. So the two there cast true strike and hurled a bucket each. The distance and weight meant it dealt about 20d6 damage each, and so the wizard was screwed (but he teleported away after we hit him, so we couldn't finish him off.... but he came back as a vampire, who we destroyed).

So after all that, it was just a case of mopping up the remaining men, and the king fled. It would take him a few more years to be able to plan an invasion again, so we let him go.

We did all that, without anyone dying, we leveled up 6 levels (the dm split it into key encounters, so we could level up more than once) and we stole enough weapons and armor to kit out an army we had started. Twas a good day... :)

Ship full of pirates. 4 Level 3-5 party members waiting on the beach. First Edition.

Level 3 Samurai.
Level 5 Thief.
Level 5 Mentat (Sorcerer)
Level 4 Cleric.

The ship pulled up, the thief hid between a couple of small boats. The Mentat opened up with a lightning bolt, the thief hit a couple from being hidden, the cleric and samurai charged and beat the HELL out of most of the crew.

After the crew was killed, including the first mate (who at one point pointed at a fellow crewman and he was thrown in the ocean. Telekineses.) The Samurai was alone on deck while the rest of the party was still clearing the crew on the beach.

Hatch opened. Out came a scar faced pirate captain with a longsword. The samurai got ready, and the pirate captain drew his longsword.

"Anytime Tiangese" (Tiangese is roughly translated as "Chinaman" since Tiang is the asian part of the DMs world."

The samurai quaffed 2 potions (one was heroism) the pirate quaffed a potion of speed.

They traded blows for what must have been 10 rounds. Coincidentally the ssamurais player screamed out "For honor" when he rolled once and got a ntural 20 and backed it up.

Finally the samurai was down to -2 hit points (Samurais could keep up at negative in 1st edition) Screamed out and attacked on the SAME initiative as the pirate captain. They both hit each other at the same time. They both did enough damage to KILL, not knock out, KILL EACH OTHER.

The rest of us not playing the samurai or captain (the DM) just said "DAMN! WOW!" I quipped that it was an amazingly fitting death for the samurai.

The samurai got resurrected but thats a little interesting extenstion to the story Ill tell another time.

my characters (level13) foolishly took on a battle that was 4 vs 7, all of them at least one CR above the PC's level and the highest, a trogoldyte wizard, was a level 16. first round, sorc/rogue /arcanetrickster ran from rivaling sorc with mirror image on and cast an empowered lightningbolt at him. the PC's sorc rolled %, hit i rolled reflex saving throw, got a 2, and it dealt nearly 75 points of damage to him, killing him instantly. cleric used super insane strat from my other post and gave the raging fighter/barb 32 str and 26 con and lured another 2 foes towards him as he cut them to ribbons, that was about several rounds into the battle, and the PC's were still holding their own at a reasonable amount of hp. with help from the sorc, the monk went and killed two more as the cleric smashed another with the fighter. then i needed to stop this fast or I'd have my head gift wrapped and sent in a package for me, so I used the final warriors last few spells and he cast magic jar on the fighter and possesed him. Then the cleric wound up dying immediatly as the sorc was forced to stay back with no spells and at 3 hp. so the monk carefully placed a nice tumble and used a sorcs scroll of dispel magic and in the end the fighter was returned to his own body through a few spells. it was a valiant battle of strenghth and wits!!
I was so proud :weep:

the group was ambushed by kobolds while investigating a sound from some bushes. combat ensued. durring combat wounded kobolds kept disapearing (poof). one player remembered the sound in the bushes (which was a decoy so the kobolds could get a good ambush) and decided to check iit out. thing was he didnt look in the right place and accidentally found some invisible wizards.

the wizards were the real orchestrators of the battle. they were saving the wounded kobolds by turning them invisible and sneaking them to safety. the pc found them by accident when he came in for a landing (he flies) on top of one of them (couldnt see him due to invisiblity). the force of being landed on nearly killed the 7th level wizard, whom the party proceded to slaughter along with 20+ kobolds and 3 other wizards of levels 3, 5 and 10.

impressive.
